edit: It seems that it needs to be unlocked by beating the 150cc tournaments. I remember doing that already but for some reason only the mushroom cup is complete? I wonder if they've been erased or just remember incorrectly. Hmm...

The meta is the Teddybuggy, roller wheels, and cloud glider with a medium weight character like Yoshi. The best thing you can do is practise. Go through a few cups on 150cc. Don't bother with 200cc as I doubt the tournament will be set to that speed.

I'm sure that there's an optimum combination but I ended up settling mostly into an all-rounder like Luigi with either the pipeframe, the one that looks like a little three pronged racing car or the Teddy body which feels weirdly nippy and slippy. As the items add loads of random chance (unless you custom out the worst offenders) it's usually all about solid racing line and drift-trick boosting as consistently as you can to maintain speed - and if you're up front keeping your rear covered holding an item behind you as defence. That being said, back when we did the site Time Trial Contest, I was never No.1

Just play online as much as possible. Track knowledge trumps any racer loadout.
