It might never have happened to you but that doesn't mean that it doesn't happen. Most street violence is men attacking other men and physical appearance plays a fairly big part in this. I think it almost pays for men to be fairly 'average' looking in this regard. The stereotypical nerdy looking guy is at risk as he looks like an easy target but a lot of bigger guys get picked on because other men feel threatened by them and/or want to prove how tough they are.

The moment female developers, female journalists and female gamers drop the 'female' qualifier, things might start improving. Case Study #2 from the linked article mentions a podcast called Girlfight. If it brings some extra clicks, the genre inequality is welcomed. When the idiots show up, the videogame industry is dominated by chauvinistic pigs. Let's level the playing field, shall we?

Everyone, regardless of genre, ethnicity, religion or whatever, deserves to be treated with the same amount of decency and respect. Which isn't to say everything, men and women in this case, is equal or should be equal. What a boring and sterile place the world would be then.

Here's my favourite example of genre inequality:

When the RMS Titanic sunk, 832 of its passengers died, 63% of all passengers aboard the ship. However, those 832 casualties consisted of 80% of all male passengers and only 25% of all female passengers. The reason for such a disparity? "Women and children first". To honour that sacrifice, the Women's Titanic Memorial Association had a granite statue of a male figure with its arms outstretched erected in Washington, D.C., known as the Titanic Memorial.

I'm sure all those women who survived went on to lead terrible, ****ty lives of repression though.

Yes, they did. Every single one of them.

I would have my wife and children saved before me.

Social Justice everyone, better off dead than a housewife.

I'd bloody love to be a house-husband, me. Clean house until 10:30, tea-break and flick myself off to Trisha until 11:00, then full-on gaming until 4:30-ish before getting tea ready. Bliss.

Bear in mind that feminism, though the name might suggest otherwise, is about gender equality.

The Titanic example is a perfect reason to support feminism as a man, not to decry it.

It's similar to some of the stuff that has been suggested about men having the burden of military service; feminists advocate women serving in frontline military roles.

I would love to see you in a Titanic remake pushing women and children out the way to get on the first boat.

Hehe! Well picked-up. One of their best scenes ever.

No need to get personal. I just mean that if you follow the reasoning, it'd suggest that no-one gets onto the boat purely due to gender.

To be fair though, it's like the anti-atheist argument of "no-one's an atheist during an air raid". Regardless of what method you choose, a situation like being on a sinking ship requires that someone decides who lives or dies according to some criteria, and there's no way to emerge from that looking good.
