Yeah I hear that. The characters are all a bit identikit, there don't seem to be any standout ones. That's also an indicator for me that the single player is going to be pretty sidelined compared to the online MP.

Does anyone else reckon that Nintendo heard a lot about this 'cod' game being popular in the West and thought they needed their own seafood based shooter?

I think this will end up as a Pikmin tier franchise, vocal fanbase but rathet here nor there in terms of sales footprint for the company. The look of the game isn't that endearing and the irony of Nintendo making a multiplayer online title on this format at this point is delicious. Would have made a great statement title though at either the WiiU or NXs launch.

Marketing campaign for the ftw, picture the scene confused, Nintendo exec explaining about its cod/squid based shooter to a stunned journalists at a press conference.

I still love the look of this and is one of the most unique experiences coming out this year. I loved NERF Arena as much as Quake III Arena, back in the day.

Does the WiiU have any kind of comms, or will this be completely silent? I imagine this will be kind of cold without cheers as people win or team chatter to work out tactics.

          Very good!

Apparently there will be no voice chat at all, which is a little bit of a worry for a team based shooter. The WiiU pad does have a mic in it but not sure if it's any good Chimp.
I know Nintendo are very cautious when it comes to internet safety, mainly for the kids...who are prob playing COD/GTA anyway, but voice chat in a match with friends should have been included.

Does the wiiu even have the code to do voice chat in games? Haven't seen it in a single one so I'm wondering in ninty even programmed it into the console at all?

Doesn't Smash Bros have voice chat in the lobby or something? I really don't know as I'm not big into multiplayer so never looked in to it.
For Splatoon though, this is quite a big issue and lots of gamers will be put off buying.

no voice oh dear was discussing this the other day with rubiq, as we where talking about playing a bit of Mariokart online, to chat you need a separate party solution, as we both have ps4's party chat on the psn is probably the best bet, its a pretty woeful state of affairs though for a next gen system, not even letting you talk to your friends.

As far as i know the only wii u game with coms is Call of Duty BO 2. it could be a blessing though, Is Nintendo ready to unleash an army of foul mouthed chipmonks onto the world, tarnishing its image as a family friendly console in the process.

It's bizarre that there's no voice chat functionality. Even the Wii had it with that funny little 'WiiSpeak' mic that shipped with Animal Crossing.

Yeah, and Nintendo dropped it pretty quickly.

I mean they got rid of that picture-letter service on the 3DS due to misuse.

i'm pretty sure you could do voice chat for Mario Kart 8. but only in the lobby area before the race starts

Some games have lobby voice chat. Personally just use one of the many free chat programs via my phone or computer.

Nintendo fail to implement even the simplest of features.

I'm sure they choose not to rather than are unable to. Like running a shariah government, it's much easier to just ban stuff than allow and and have to police it.

Nintendo will never shake the child-friendly image - and I bet they don't want to - so why not split in half to cater for children and adults? The adult branch can be called Mantendo. That way, if you buy a Nintendo NX you won't get voice chat because you're six and shouldn't hear people saying bollocks and fanny a lot. But if you buy a Mantendo MX you get voice chat and can say bollocks and fanny a lot.

Not only was that wiispeak thing utter garbage but you had to use the code in the box to download the app to use it, meaning you couldn't palm the useless thing off onto anyone else. Nintendo are such arseholes / smart.
