I bet this doesn't have split screen either, like every other 'social' racing game. I don't really consider playing against a stranger called 420_n0_sc0pe to be socialising. Playing with my mates in my living room on a Saturday afternoon on the other hand...

It's a bit of both I think. It has definitely made multiplayer more accessible for people who don't have mates to hang and game with IRL, and I know some people on here like to play online for the banter and social element as much as the actual gaming. Sort of like going to the pub really but with more frags.
On the other hand it's become so dominant that people who prefer to play with friends in the same room are now pretty marginalised. It's only Nintendo and indies that now support this type of gaming, by and large. It does make me laugh that games like Driveclub claim to be 'the most social driving game ever' yet lack a basic splitscreen option a la Super Mario Kart.
The upcoming Star Wars Battlefront has splitscreen though, which I'm really happy about!

The PC version has been delayed till Spring 2016 to unlock the framerate and work on the visuals. Presumably that confirms 30fps is the console rate as it wouldn't really matter otherwise. It gives the impression a shoddy port was inbound too but the Batman fallout has steered EA away at the last minute. Any content released post launch on PS4 and XBO upto the delayed release date will be included with the PC version when its released
