Yes I forgot to add the GC version! Sounds like the GC ver is currently more tempting. Is the DC ver just a straight port of the PS1 ver, graphics aside?

DC - Ported from the PC, it has the higher resolution 640x480 backgrounds which show slightly more detail. The characters do seem a little off though as if the lighting model wasn't fully tested, in other versions lighting effects from the environment such as flames would show on how the character was lit, in the DC version they tend to stand out from the backgrounds a little. The DC port also has higher sound quality, 60fps FMVs and a PAL 50/60Hz mode.

GC - Ported from the PS1 dual shock version so it has the arrange mode but is missing all the extras from the DC/PC release such as the concept art galleries. The game is upscaled from 320x240 to 640x480 and some of the areas can seem really pixelated. The character models have a higher detail than the PS1 version though and look very good in the environments.

N64, a piece of technical excellence but the game really suffers due to the compression. Admire it from a far but stick to the others if you want to actually play the game.

Personally, I'd go for the DC version.

Many thanks for your advice. I just have to try and track down the DC ver now...

Personally, I would go with the PS1 version, because I feel the characters "sit" in the environment much better. I've never played the DC/GC versions, but have played the PC version, and I found the high-res 60fps characters jarring against the comparatively low-resolution backgrounds.

The PS1 versions look best on a CRT. The others look falsely upscaled to nasty 480i so shimmer and have a slightly hollow look.

I just played it on the Vita. Looks pretty sweet on that small screen and plays perfectly on it.

That doesn't mean it'll be a good game, which is the point I'm trying to make.

The HD version of REmake is a 14-year-old game that at the time was very good and loved by many. They just made it HD so we could play it again. Nobody had any expectations.

Remaking a game after six years is one thing, but to take a 17-year-old game and have to remake it from scratch is an entirely different thing all together. I really don't see how without changing it drastically they can pull off a title that will be anywhere near the quality that REmake was.

Have switched to hard on RE3. Quick question - is the knife utterly useless or should I be using it?

Pretty much. Resi 3 was built for speed running imo. Item locations are also randomised on each play through which was a great touch.

Best version of each Resi game:

Resi 1 Directors Cut - PSX
                      Resi 2 - Dreamcast
                      Resi 3 - Dreamcast
                      Code Veronica - Dreamcast

                      Remake - Steam
                      Zero - Steam
                      Resi 5 - Steam
                      ...
                      Resi 6 - the bin.

You missed out 4 - though that's probably to avoid the debate between GameCube (original appeal), Wii (motion controls which some people like) and PC (poor by default, but fan mods improve the textures - though I don't like the look of them from what I've seen).

I didn't like the "dodge" move in 3. It made you godlike when mastered. I distinctly remember a point in the game when I was in a room with 3-4 dogs and no ammo, and literally was just like dodge-dodge-dodge-dodge for 10 minutes (just to see if I could stay alive indefinitely).

Best part of the game was fighting the Nemesis after finishing the game and unlocking the gatling gun in the Mercs minigame. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIINNNNNGGGGGGG

I can't remember how to do the dodge at all...

It's the Steam version as it has the GC textures. The cut scenes still look rubbish mind, as they're video and not in-game like the gamecube.

I'm now remembering why I really liked RE3 so much back in the day. When RE2 came out and I first put it on and it starts outside in the city, I thought the game was going to be amazing, making my way through the city. Then just a few minutes later, it's the police station which is pretty much the mansion again. Turned out to be a great game regardless. But RE3 then delivered what I was hoping for in those first few minutes of RE2.
