^I can see that. Good point. But Raccoon 'City' felt like a wee little town, didn't it? I think the helicopter opening sequence of Dead Rising really nailed that feeling of zombie invasion.

I loved Raccoon City. It was perfect to me in terms of scope; not overwhelmingly giant, but dense enough to capture all the staples of an america zombie flick. Half the maps in the first L4D are based on Resi 2 which says it all really.

I felt like they were going somewhere good with the Outbreak games in terms of further exploring Raccoon City but I never got round to playing the second one properly - such a shame as it looked ace.

I think I need to try those Outbreak games again.

I finished RE3. Generally loved it. The graphics are better, with a lot of moving detail which really helps bring the backgrounds to life. Some locations look fantastic. Tons of zombies and enemies and big weapons and so, with the quick turn and seemingly slight faster character (not even sure on this, it just seems easier to zig zag around enemies), any Aliens reference seems much more suited to this game. It is a far more action packed game than either of its predecessors.

But while I died a lot and Nemesis was a pain in my backside, I felt it lost a lot of the tension and lost all jump scares of the previous games. The jumps in RE2 got me several times. Not once did it happen in RE3. I felt Mr X had much more impact than Nemesis. So I missed that. And I felt the pacing wasn't quite as good (it doesn't really build to an end).

But those things aside, I think it's incredibly strong. The city location is really well realised and offers loads of variety. And the best thing was seeing it suffer damage along the way. That helped make it feel alive and real.

Actually, on the lack of jump scares, I think they made a fundamental error - cut scenes. The second it switches to a cut scene, you can rest if even just briefly. RE3 introduced too many of its challenges with cut scenes. The previous REs did this for a couple of things but the real jump scares feel like they are happening in real time.
