Yeah, I think so too. Although the sequels went all sorts of places, the first one is the only game in the series I really go back to (and even then, only the original; I hated the remake with a passion).

It's weird because I find it symbolic of many of the things I both really like and really hate about modern gaming.

For instance, it fused modern 3D gaming with 2D elements (the overall perspective). It had really cool set-pieces, such as the Nikita segment and the boss battles. It had a fun setting and brilliant atmosphere. It had reasonable voice acting (unlike most prior games which were voiced by, seemingly, random people pulled off the street). It tried to do everything in-engine, rather than having jarring transitions between awesome-looking CG and in-game graphics. The term "interactive movie" was banded around a great deal during the Mega-CD days, but I've always felt that MGS was the first game that really ran with the term.

Conversely, though, it brought in a wave of game design that is based more on narrative than gameplay. Basically, it created a world where games like Heavy Rain could later exist (which thought they were movies, though they would've been crap movies). Games that you watch as much as play.

I still love it and go back every few years. I think that I've finished it about 15 times now since release.

Konami were stunning. But very much of an era, If you're a Pro Evo/MGS fan then this 'era' might be extended a tad.

Silent Hill was not a 'franchise' to me. There were two stunning SH games, then a mediocre third. The Silent Hill era ended in 2001, 14 years back, but OH what a swansong with SH2. What a game, what a game. Silent Hill only lasted for two games (in my own mind) but god those games were immense. SH dropped a new form of psychological horror in a world so convincing and moody and free-feeling, SH2 streamlined the gameplay to make it funner than ever to play, and completely replayable. Ungh....god they were good,,,how do all these western devs keep managing to futch it up???

Nemesis/Gradius. THE horizontal shooter for me. Getting thru to 'the brain' when I was 10 back in the arcade days was an incredible achievement for me. The sleek lasers in that game were like porn. They still are. They're my very favourite laser in ANY game. I like ALL Gradiuses (I class the Parodius games as reskinned Gradiuses)...and even though Grad V messed with the lasers and was a Treasure game...it gave us something equally as good in a different way for a modern time. And the Salamander games were Gradiuses too, and they gave us the orgasmic ripple lasers, and I had Salamander 2 on import on PS1 and god that was soooo good.

Super Castlevania IV. Imagine a cartridge that housed THE best bassy, abstract mood-jazz soundtrack of ALL TIME. And then also gave you a cool game where you could could not only crack a whip...you could *manipulate* it, frig it about, flank it, jazz it, bast it at enemies. Flog 'em at will, crack 'em, shwap em. Lash 'em with an almost lust. And them sound fx. There is no Castlevania game like IV. It is one of a kind.

Contra 3. The best game on the SNES along with Zelda. And the MUSIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!

Does this thread not prove that Konami were the greatest third party house across 20 odd years?

            That's debatable.

Konami were clearly awesome in both arcades and home, but Capcom could match them across the same timeframe in both home and arcade gaming too.

That said, both companies have fallen off a cliff in terms of quality output too.

I'm not so sure. Capcom all to often dipped into franchise milking far more than Konami.
Konami also had much more quality in the 16 bit era.

Konami did plenty of franchise milking in their time, especially in the 16-bit era. Sparkster, TMNT, Castlevania, Contra...all of those franchises got releases across different formats back then and that's the tip of the iceberg.

Arcade-wise, Capcom CPS-era pretty much stomps on anything Konami did (despite Konami's coin-ops generally being top-notch).

I'd put Konami and Capcom on a par, they both made games that were art in their prime...in a similar way (ya get me???)

We don't NEED to argue over who were better. We really don't. It's like comparing George Duke and Herbie Hancock.

All I ever said in the first place was that it was debatable, which it definitely is.

Nakamura started the debate and then backtracked!

Capcom made Street Fighter III: Third Strike - clearly the superior company.

It would be a good thread to start. Two Japanese powerhouses of the industry. Konami the great and Capcom the very good! [emoji6] [emoji1]
