It's not just scammer sellers though. It's also randomers from Google swooping in to get a reasonably priced game or piece of hardware from a community member, then bunging it up on Ebay for 3x the price Buy It Now.

You're never going to be able to completely prevent that, but you can take steps to do so.

An additional point is that the Trading folder is provided for free by the mods/admins. You might have a choice of who you trade with, but those mods take it up on themselves to chase up bad deals on the buyer's behalf, close threads, ban members, update lists of bad traders etc. By opening the floodgates to anyone posting, you are potentially creating a lot of work for them.

Not worth it for the most part, too much effort for just a few quid. One of the reasons i binned a big stack of pc engine cd games last week.

Well that's up to the seller, isn't it? If he gets interest from a member with no posts and an established member, he can sell to the latter if he chooses. If he only gets interest from a member with no posts then this isn't really an issue of items being unavailable to members of the community at a fair price because the community didn't want it.

Basically a trading forum works better for both buyers and sellers if the market is as large as possible, and restricting it like this makes it too hard to sell stuff, and therefore there's less stuff gonna be made available until eventually everyone gives up on it.

J0e I'm looking for an import from the UAE like right now in the wanted forum, haha, but yeah it's not exactly like the olden days.

It's true that the sales forum isn't what it was. So I appreciate that you guys that sell a lot of stuff might want a larger market. But I like how this place has a small, trustworthy trading community that always give good prices. So that's why I'm in favour of the continuation of the current restrictions.

How many have you sold on this forum?

Having safeguards in place is a good thing and this forum is still really my first port of call but the sales forums these days are desolate, whether that's because nobody has anything to sell, we already own everything we want or most can get a better price on eBay I don't know

When I had my 'fund my divorce sale' I embargoed a sale here for a month so people here could have the pick of my collection and that single handedly funded my divorce, I don't think I could do that now

The stuff I sold here is now selling on eBay for over double what I sold it for, wish I had held onto a lot of it now, still though in recent weeks I managed to get a rarity back on this forum for much less than the eBay prices so happy with that

So far, five (pre having the thread pulled the first time) and hammering out a deal for some others currently. But I knew it would be slow... I've sold about 35 in total across all places so far.

I listed 100 items on eBay within the last month when they had an offer on (?1 maximum fee per sale) and only 16 didn't sell and I reckon if I out them in a straight auction then I might be left with 3-5

I prefer a 30 day best offer style auction as people can make offers and if you are happy then you can accept plus it means you post things as they sell rather than waiting for them all to end and posting loads on one day

There are few sales threads of note because there are so few posters nowadays.

This forum has declined more than any other I've ever used.

To offer a contrasting voice, whilst the forum is quieter, I don't find it "worse".

Plus "forum culture" is on the wane anyway. It's a shame, but it's true. Maybe it'll come back, who knows. I'm going to cling to it though.

Forum culture may have declined but many others are still very busy. Something is clearly amiss here. It can still be good bit but it happens in fits and starts. Normally in the Retro section too.
