The Christian Whitehead versions are way better than what you could do with an emulator (at least better than what I could do). They’re properly good. True 16:9, spin dash in Sonic 1, other stuff I can’t remember.

And the answer to your question is at minimum once per gen

The restoration of extra Zones and/or Zone areas that were originally cut out of the original final release. IIRC this was a thing in the mobile version of Sonic 2 (Hidden Palace Zone) that Taxman developed, although Yuji Naka was quick to publicly voice his displeasure about this so I don't know if the versions on Origins will go that far.

Today's trailer shows the restored hidden palace zone and another zone I don't recognise, in the origins collection.

          Fair enough.

I do remember Yuji Naka being unhappy about Sonic Team leaving the remnants of the code of Hidden Palace Zone in the game though. Apparently he was surprised to find that it had still been in the final build all along.

            That's it!

For me they're definitive. I remember them launching on iPhone (back in ~2010 or so I guess) and, crap touch controls aside, it was the first time I felt we had some Sonic that actually improved on the MD originals.

Then of course he went onto make Mania, which was absolutely delightful.

EDIT: And I should add, the corollary to Whitehead's Sonic efforts was the earlier Sonic the Hedgehog 4, also an iPhone effort. And I remember really looking forward to that and it was complete, for want of a better word, ballsack. Terrible game. And then Whitehead Sonic 1 came and made it all OK again.

Sonic 4 is just crap, full stop - and I'm saying that as somebody who was dumb enough to purchase the WiiWare version of Sonic 4 Episode 1 back in the day!

The ironic thing about it all is that Sonic 4 Episode 2 didn't get a WiiWare port because Nintendo actually deemed it too large for the digital platform - WiiWare had to be of a certain file size. Peak Nintendo behaviour.

In hindsight, Nintendo probably did Wii users everywhere a favour on that one!

Yeah I bought Sonic 4 Ep 1. Man was that a disappointment. The controls were awful, so floaty. It was at that point that I recognised I just had to give up on new Sonic games being good.

Not sure if it's bull**** but seeing waves on Twitter that this is going to be $45. Even I think that's daft; most of the games on here have been on the iPhone for years for $2 each!

It's up on preorder for £33 and £37 for deluxe on Xbox store already.

That's a real shame, as I was looking forward to Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I guess I'll need to wait and see what they've added to the package and make my decision based on that.

                          £33?!

Even I have my limits. That is ridiculous.

Also, for ‘character animation during menus’ you need to upgrade to the ‘premium fun pack’?? WTF

And you don't get a letterbox background in the deluxe version. Eh? Did uk resistance make this picture?

                              Maximum urine extraction right there.

                              Sega are a joke.

I assume this is price elasticity due to the success of the Sonic 2 movie.

Like they think they'll sell a million at 33 and that's more money than 3 million at 10.
