They could go the Gamecube > Wii route again in terms of compatibility, but I'd be very surprised if they did. These carts are probably going to bottleneck pretty badly if more third-party games are making good use of the new SSD tech found on the PS5/XB. It'd need a separate slot for Switch games in that case.

There's also the global components shortage to think about. All five companies (inc. Nvidia and AMD) can't sell enough of their products as it stands.

True. The next Nintendo storage media is difficult to envisage. It has to be portable, so probably carts of some sort but the SSD bottleneck as you say is a major issue right now.

Is bandwidth on the carts they use an issue? pretty high read rate. The cpu & gpu are the bottle necks, and lazy coding from the devs as well.

That's true. I'd forgotten that they were designed with future-proofing in mind, to an extent. Still, I'd be very surprised at fully upscaled BC. As always with Nintendo's hardware and feature nuances, it's better to expect the very worst until something has been announced.

Now I'm begrudgingly signing up for a year of Switch Online because multiplayer MK8, ARMS and Splatoon is an absolute must.

Why the hell did everyone demand that Nintendo charge us money for online? We're now paying for a premium service without the premium features.

Nobody wanted this, because we all knew it would be s***.

You're not paying for a premium service yet. You're only paying for the bog standard service. When they add the N64 and Megadrive price tier later this month, that's when you get the real premium service and premium features.

It’s not great compared to Sony/MS but it’s only €20/year.

The way certain people on here and elsewhere have defended it, you'd be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

The information in this article can help you when game progress from your most recent save data backup is missing or was not saved to the Save Data Cloud service.

If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, you will not have access your Save Data Cloud backups. You will be able to access your previous Save Data Cloud backups again if you resubscribe within 180 days.
All my save data is gone because they're too thrifty to store around 120KB of my data for the long haul.

Obviously it's one more reason for someone not to unsubscribe, or to lose/sell their hardware.

What is it like £2 a month? You get some ROMz. You get to gank people on Mario Kart. It's worth it I reckon.

No doubt what we will get with this is a slim selection to start with, then nothing for months.
                            Yeah, I cancelled my sub.

How dare you! We pay more than twice that for PS+ and probably don't play any of those games! You'll take the games that you'll actually play and do nothing with them like everyone else!

I cancelled my sub after the first year, although recently signed up again as one of five people in a family plan. Worked out as 12m for £6 each - probably worth it for the occasional mario kart session alone, but I'd be buying at least two first-party games in the next year anyway so I reckon it'll pay for itself via eshop voucher savings.
