The thing is you don't need it on every game, just where there's fluctuations in frame time. I did try it on Elden Ring as an example and it does change how smooth that game is to play (on Xbox the frame rate was pretty wild before they patched it) but it still makes the picture quality less punchy due to that lack of local dimming.

In the end I just turned it off. If Sony ever fix it on the TV I'll use it but then it's taken them 2 years to get VRR on my model so I don't hold out much hope.

Yep, it's a niche option for a limited number of sets so it's never going to get the focus from Sony. That'll be why it's taken so long in the first place.

      Embrace the 30FPS future!

As long as its a solid, unwavering 30 with the option to turn motion blur off (30fps is blurry enough thanks), then I can just about live with it....for some games...

Plus, we have to remember. If Sony can't release titles like The Last of Us Part III at mandatory 30fps, how in the world will they be able to charge us £79.99 for The Last of Us Part III Remastered on Playstation 6 where the only difference is the framerate unlocked?

VRR has been widely supported on TVs for a few years now. It’s even part of the HDMI 2.x specifications. Sony need to get the finger out.

Its niche feature at best in the grand scheme of things, only important to people like us, most people aren’t even watching true hd content on their tvs let alone 4k, 120htz, hdr with freesync.

True most people are not utilizing their TVs to the fullest extent. And are probably using some awful dynamic faux HDR picture setting or such like but people splashing out for £450 consoles and gaming PCs will also likely be spending good money on a higher end screen and that’s where the money is in TVs and monitors.

My old man has a 70inch 4k set, he’s never even watched a native 1080p blue ray let alone native 4k content on it, just upscaled sd rubbish from some cheap stream box, its unwatchable to my eyes yet he insists its great, throws up.

Thanks for the list, according to that my Samsung Q80T does not support VRR, but does support FreeSync, which Sony doesn’t appear to be using hence why the PS5 is saying my TV doesn’t support VRR.

                          Utterly ridiculous situation.

Sony have disabled code stacking as the rush to stack 7 years worth of cheap psnow codes to avoid paying £15 a month is obviously something Sony didn't bank on the masses doing. This kind of flys in the face of what Microsoft did with the upgrade to ultimate for a quid offer that let you stack 3 years of gold then convert it.

It really dose show the difference between the two company's approaches, Sony needs its game division to remain profitable it cant bank roll this division for years as it dosent have the money Microsoft do, if their gamepass service is front loaded at a discount rate by all its subscribers for years in advance i cant see them being able to financially support it or bring big name games to it.

Yeah, MS offered a super cheap upgrade in the hope they can get you on board with a service you won't want to give up after trying. As you say though, they can afford to play the long game.

Sony need to remain profitable to keep going and invest in the future. MS have near limitless influx of cash due to their services that piggy back off Windows, It wouldn’t surprise me if the xbox division has been run as the biggest tax dodge in history, simply to draw profits away from other divisions and avoid paying it in tax. If they wipe out the competition then great, if not no biggie.
