Developers for this stuff have terms for this - I've seen it referred to as "the golden path". It's the series of steps which lie between the user thinking/saying "I'm gonna buy x", and the actual final moment they hit the BUY button that charges their payment card. This is important for them as they generally try to make sure that while bugs can exist in many parts of the user experience, that there are absolutely no bugs which affect the golden path.

Every little bit of loading, or connection errors, or anything else - could be the moment someone says "oh forget it" and they decide to do something else.

It wouldn't surprise me if Micosoft have data to support this; that they expect increased revenue just by making the interface snappier.
    Interesting point!

Not feeling the way that looks. It's not as bad as Grandia I suppose but still...

Grand Theft Auto's Cluckin Bell Restaurant Opens in Real Life

"Earlier this weekend a real life Cluckin Bell popped up in San Diego during Comic-Con 2022. It has been described by its creator, BoyWorldWide, as an "immersive experience" and a 4 day "art performance" that is now coming to an end. The restaurant was located on 14035 Midland Road, Poway, CA 92064 and was incredibly accurate to the one from Grand Theft Auto. It featured employees in chicken hats, yellow uniforms, and accurate albeit relatively lewd branding. The real life Cluckin Bell even sold Sprunk, a parody of Sprite within the Grand Theft Auto uniform.

Outside of the establishment, a poster of Grand Theft Auto V protagonist Trevor Phillip's was posted on the wall as a reminder to employees not to serve him as he has a reputation of causing mayhem in and around the fast food joint. The "art performance" ran from July 21st to July 24th, offering a real taste of GTA for fans. We've reached out to Rockstar Games to see if this was affiliated with the video game developer."

I've no idea why they do this. I mean, someone has to process all those sprites; it doesn't happen by accident.

I know that not doing it can introduce shimmer artifacts if you want the game to be fullscreen, but even at 1080p that's generally not a problem, and I guess most people would prefer the choice.

I'm really concerned that the industry is going to think that no-one wants these games - this, Grandia, Chrono Cross - when in practice we want them, but we expect a reasonable amount of care in preserving how they looked.

Admittedly you're right, this one seems to look better than Grandia did; I suspect it's because of the isometic nature of the game.

It's for the folks who like their retro games with the graphics ruined. Comic Sans is a bold choice of font as well.

The weirdness of these reminds me of the lengths some publishers would go to Westernise Japanese games back in the day before they realised that there is a good sized audience of people who actually just like Japanese stuff and actively don't want it excessively localised.

The people who are buying Tactics Ogre are cool with pixel art, Square. You don't need to stick Super Eagle mode on for them.

It's frustrating. They always look so bad. We've seen it done well but SE in particular are just hell bent on this approach.

Ill skip it anyway, just like with Grandia and Chrono Cross. If sales are bad enough that they do no more then so be it.

My "favourite" of that era was SOS Final Escape/Disaster Report/Zettai whatever-it-was (that PS2 game where you survived earthquakes). Agetec did the port.

Renaming characters (the main guy was Keith I think) and the city it takes place in is a given, but as well as combing every single texture to remove Japanese text they went to the trouble of making the guy have unrealistically blonde hair. You know, just in case you couldn't handle a main character with err... brown hair.

A survival horror game based on the Spielberg War of the World.
Still in production, but I do like the concept.

I'd probably prefer something like Disaster Report, but set in the original timeline.

Annapurna just put a few next gen updates out for games.
My question is, who's going to buy Annapurna first?

It’s funny, mainly because with Octopath Traveler and Triangle Strategy they had systems in place for fans to report feedback after the public play tests. Those games have weird smudge filters over the top of the in-game sprites, but in the roster menus they’re pin sharp. In an ideal world I’d be playing both of them on a CRT at 240p, but that’s never going to happen so I’m not really fussed with filtering either way.

This one doesn’t look too bad. Chrono Cross looked absolutely horrific, like it’s running on a struggling PSX emulator or something.

That filter is one of the reasons I never ended up buying them. The Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake looks good though.
