The Saudis increase their stake in Nintendo

I’m really surprised Nintendo allowed this to happen.

Yeah seems weird for a Japanese company. Nintendo could quite easily have stayed private.

NCL haven't been a private company for a long time, though. The Yamauchi Family pretty much now have next-to-no involvement in the company they founded, bar a small stake (10%, I think?).

Also worth noting that the Saudis have stakes in other significant gaming companies.

Yeah; it's the reason I haven't bought anything by SNK in years, as I believe they have a controlling stake in them. And believe me, that pisses me off.

                It's not just SNK though.

They also have stakes in Capcom, Nexon, Koei Tecmo, EA, Activision-Blizzard and Take-Two.

Yes, but they own 96% of SNK.

I'm not telling other people not to buy SNK products; I'm just saying that I presently don't and this is why.

Yes, and if you properly comprehended my original post then you'll see that I'm clearly underlining my original point about the Saudis having other stakes elsewhere in the gaming industry in general.

I never mentioned anything about specific controlling stakes. You were the one who decided to interject with that and then contextualise that about your buying preferences when nobody else here did.

It's gross. I understand why companies sell out to Saudi of course but it does cheapen the sporting part of sports etc now that they constantly pay for big events. Pretty much the prince buying what he likes. It's an extreme version of me playing mario kart then watching wrestling I guess!

I'm definitely not a fan of Saudi sports/mediawashing either (love football but swerved the World Cup entirely). I hate that they now have their claws dug into the gaming companies that have been massive parts of our favourite pastimes.

Sadly, I don't know what can be done about it at this point. Product boycotting is ethically admirable but anybody thinking it'll do any significant damage to a trillionaire oil-state is deluded.

Yes... I did that. That was intentional, in case anyone was to suggest that it's weird I still buy Nintendo products and not SNK products.

Do you think I was having a go at you or something?

I don’t understand why Nintendo of all people would bother, the last thing they need is investment or extra funds.

Indeed. It’s hard to fathom. Maybe they just want to diversify across markets for risk purposes. They might also see the Middle East as a huge market one day (if not already) and want to prop themselves in good favour first.

It’ll be interesting to see how much of a chunk ends up there eventually.

That would make sense...if Nintendo knew that the Saudis were actively acquiring shares in the company.

They've already confirmed that they didn't.
