Seeing the GP figures being debated now on the chances Core is included in that figure. If it isn't then GP grew by around 1-2m, if it is then they're losing subs steadily.

Either makes sense as to why they're de-emphasing focus on the service. The 'E3' season discourse is going to be eventful

The question remains why let these rumours fester for a week and get as far as the main stream press to then not even confirm what games are going multi platform.

If it is sea of thieves and hifi rush (we haven’t had confirmation from the horse mouth) its been a pretty good lesson in how not to handle these news cycles. sooo Incompetency? or testing the waters?

Tempering controversy. Could have been nailed in a day when it all kicked off and there's still tons of vagueness around how they're wording it.

Our answer. Core is inflating the numbers, it was estimated back during the buyout that Core would account for approx. 11m subs from the Gold transition. They might have managed to transition some to Ultimate with the Gold change over. Only so many ways to break the stagnation, move GP beyond traditional Xbox or move away from GP as the focus, we got our answer.

MS? Inflating numbers? I just don’t believe it.

They said they didn't want to ruin the already planned announcements for those titles, which I think is fair... so don't think this is incompetence. They're letting those teams release the official information when they're ready.

From the official sea of thieves twitter account yesterday it's pretty much "official" that is coming to PlayStation. Hifi Rush has had similar confirmation evidence...

In the podcast they were also quick to stop the extended rumours (read BS) that Indiana Jonss and Starfield weren't included, but they didn't mention Sea of Thieves or Hifi Rush at all... so yeah those two I'd say as definite.

I'm betting on the other two being Grounded and Pentiment just because they fit the bill so well.

They said we don’t want to rule things out regarding starfeild so it feels like that’s still on the table for a later date

I missed that part, did they actually say that? Like specifically mention they weren't ruling things out for Starfield on other platforms?

I'll have to listen to it again... admittedly I was multi-tasking.

One of the other reasons they may not have actually named the four games is because maybe they have an agreement in place to announce them at a state of play or Nintendo direct? You never know...

Four Xbox-exclusive games heading to PS5 and Switch, confirms Phil Spencer | Eurogamer.net
The four games are a test bed for future titles to see how reception goes. Outside of Sea of Thieves and Grounded where any growth in userbase will extend their lives across all formats Hi-Fi Rush and Pentiment aren't going to be big news on other formats so I'd guess seeing how it goes as muc revolves around the sight of Xbox on rival systems as it does sales potential.

We already know what's releasing late this year but they're committing to another post-Series generation and bigging up its power.
Handheld version or potentially the first sub-20m unit Xbox gen?

Spencer downplays the idea that exclusives will play a large role in the market in the coming years

Everyone seems to have their sights set on Starfield but the speculation around Indiana Jones would make more sense as presumably Disney would have had their own thoughts on sales volumes.

Microsoft won't offer a breakdown of Ultimate vs Core subscribers

It's the least suprising aspect of the event, that they pitch Xbox as centrally a Game Pass access point but

When they explicitly stated that "we know that Game Pass will only be available on Xbox" they tipped their hand with that statement. The subtle shift in messaging, the acknowledgement that Game Pass is tied to the console and they don't have the avenues to change that leading them to few routes to grow here on unless they start to step away from the confines the console creates.

MS says they can't make Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS work for them as there's isn't enough room tom monetise it

Their SAAS strategy is working. Yeah they would probably want more subs but at the end of the day there is a point where the marginal cost of an additional sub is almost nothing. I think they are well and truly past this point.

Interesting to hear the snippet re: new hardware. I look forward to hearing more about their next box. Whether it will bring me back into the Xbox console space who knows. My guess is the next xbox will be very PC like. For example if I could run Windows 11 on an xbox and run games like on xbox console without faffing around like on pc, that could be an instant buy as I get the best of both worlds.

This is because, despite law changes to stop Apple having a monopoly they implemented new charges for anyone hosting a rival storefront on iOS which essentially makes it's worthless.

With the comment "we know game pass will only be available on Xbox"... It's pretty clear now from the activision merger court case that Xbox tried to put it outside of the ecosystem and Nintendo and Sony declined.

As long as Xbox is in the business of making rival hardware in the console space that is where the boundary ends for the game pass model.

They could still do more in the cloud space. They could expand hardware into handheld devices and they are definitely expanding into mobile... but for now there are some major impediments.

And I think that's where this comes from. The next 3-5 years will be testing the waters to see how much the existing userbase objects and if their titles carry demand on other platforms. Without Xbox hardware sales growing they're run out room and the writing is on the wall for Series S/X now. I know they've commented on making as powerful an Xbox 5 as they can next gen but we've seen time and again that consumers don't care. Really, I'd expect a lot to rest on an Xbox Handheld for them. It'll never rival Switch but I struggle to picture Sony being able to go toe to toe with them if they essentially launch a customised, subsidised Windows based handheld. The brand might be weak but it carries more weight than Deck etc do so could be well positioned to be a way to play all new titles on the go (because we know Nintendo platforms are never the go to place for that). A middle ground route for them to try next gen, if they can get overall sales back up to even the 50m mark they'll be far behind Sony and Nintendo again but it would still likely see a surge in games sales and GP numbers whilst having the door ajar to take some titles third party to recoup sales. If their next hardware strategy fails yet again then as an alternative the road is firmly also set to just widely transition away from hardware in around 10 years time.
