Good man. Nice to see I wasn't the only one to go at that point too. I still have nightmares about grey balls with red stars on. Still, at least Hyper Sonic was worth it. Even better, Super Tails! At last! Revenge...

    "Tails, lift me up here."
"Tails, fly the plane while I do the hero stuff."
"Tails, sacrifice yourself for my safety."
    "Tails..."

    SCHOOM!

    "Flickies, attack!"

Do you guys think that Sonic illustrates the point that as much as we enjoy 3d games, we didnt expect it to erradicate 2d?
Before 3D, Sonic was cool. purely because he was the anti Mario, Sega's punk in a middleaged Nintendo world if you like, moody and quick he didnt speak, and we were left to imagine his character, it wasnt very cute.

3D comes along and Sonic becomes the hedgehog next door, with that all American voice and zeal, the hyperspeed brooding gave way to adolsent naughtiness, the boss battles lost there impetus and became an almost Tekken like button bash affair, and despite there enormity the danger of the bosses had been removed, no longer were we fearful for Sonic's life as Robotnic contived machines of doom for our hero, now if he succumbed the fate awaiting him would be to have to go through those bloody cut scenes again. Sob...And it all looked so good in Sonic CD with the 3D bonus sections

I'd say that's pretty much spot on. Sonic's chatacter has been ruined He was never supposed to speak. I hate what they did with the whole Super Sonic thing in the Sonic Adventure series. It was fun to blast thru the levels again with Super Sonic in the 2d titles, that extra bit of speed and power.

          To tell the truth...

I am dissapointed with 3D games in general.
I miss 2D play mechanics, I miss the level design that is only available through the use of 2D and sprites. I miss the kinds of levels and genres we used to have in older games. I miss cartoon-esque sprites with high pixelation.
          I miss gaming.

Hence why all Ive been playing this week has been GBA games on my GBA player on my cube....
Perhaps you should try some Sonic Advance on a GBA player?

Hallalujah Molloy for speaking sanely against an ocean of change!
          I salute thee!

(and yes, years of excess toodee sprite absorbtion has driven me completely mad, TEEHEE!!!)

I?m one of those who really enjoyed Sonic Adventure despite it's faults.
(The city hub wasn't all that interesting, the multiple characters and the camera issues as always with Sonic Team). But all in all...It was a really good game.

Sonic Adventure 2 had it's moments every now and then even though the game wasn't special in any way... The "Final Rush" level were you grinded trough the atmosphere was very intense.

And I do think the Super Sonic segment at the end of the first Sonic Adventure was very cool... The whole Perfect Chaos boss battle is among my favourite boss battles.

I don't think we should dismiss 3D Sonic just yet.

Sonic Heroes is number one in the UK chart right now so we?re guaranteed to see atleast a Sonic Heroes 2 being announced very shortly.

I?m sure to buy Heroes myself pretty soon, being such an old Sonic fan...Even though he may not deserve my love and attention nowadays.

Okay guys....You want Sonic Team to know how you feel about 3D Sonic...Tell them straight in the face!

"Question: How do you incorporate fan requests/feedback into future titles?
Naka: Please send e-mails to [email protected]. We constantly receive tons of emails from Sonic Team fans and we all read every single one of them. But I wish all the letters were in Japanese so I could actually understand them!"

There you have it guys.... Send your suggestions and comments to [email protected]!

hmmm, perhaps some of us could even get together and translate it into Japanese for them to read it easily?

Its nice to know they read their fans emails.

I might send them a short + sweet email asking them to port NiGHTS over to the GC. Change nothing except the gfx - everything else is fine.

Otaku: I know you're not into 3D (probably less than me even), but you have to admire the 2D gameplay in NiGHTS, my 3rd fave game of all time infact.

a 2d games that sucks ass? Played enough of those on the C64/Amiga/SNEs/Megadrive to last me a lifetime.

I've yet to play my copy of Sonic Heroes yet...BG&E been gripping me, but the Sonic Adventure games certainly has their moments...

3D and 2D are two vert different styles of games but you can certainly enjoy both and perhaps direct comparions are unfair. I've enjoyed Metroid Prime and Fusion...and whilst I prefered Fusion that doesn't make Prime a bad game. Evolution my friends....there is a place for Sonic/Mario/Samus/Link in 3d as well as 2D....the games are just different.

Which you prefer is just a matter of opinion.

                        *removes splinter from ass*

Hmm spiky fence I'm sitting on!

Totally agree there is a place for both, but 2D has all but dissapeared, apart from the odd hacked together Advance games, major 2D releases are almost non existent. If the industry wants to maintain its amzing growth, then surely they shouldnt be removing viable medium from the market, just reposition it to sit alongside.

For my part, it's not a matter of 2D vs 3D at all. I have no irrational hangups about 3D and have enjoyed many games in both dimensions.

Anti 3D types remind me of old blues guitarists who moan bitterly about electronic music and how "no-one writes proper songs anymore".

However, I still maintain that Sonic's transition to 3D has -so far- been poorly implemented. It's as if they moved to 3D beacuse it was the "thing to do", not because they had a viable 3D concept (this is where Mario and Sonic's respective 3D outings differ, imo).

My ideal next-gen Sonic would actually be 2.5D.

Look at most RPGs. Other than fancier graphics, the move to 3D has added nothing to how the game plays. In Sonic's case, it has actually detracted from the game. It simply tries to be Sonic in 3D, rather than a game with Sonic in, in 3D. If you get my meaning.

Look at how different the 3D Mario games play to their 2D counterparts. In the older games, you simply have to get to the right side of the screen. In the newer versions, you are set goals, and have to complete tasks rather than get to a certain point.

I'm not a huge fan of these more goal orientated games, but that doesn't mean I automatically wish for a return to 2D. I simply want good games, and with the lasting effect the Sonic games had on me, I expected better.

Listen to the music. The old games had some of the finest tracks in gaming, with that certain techno (I'm rubbish with music, but you know what I mean) style. Why on earth they changed it to rawk I'll never know.

Even the Advance games are pieces of tat. I don't understand how a company can get a sequel so wrong. At least EA are consistent, you never see the huge drop in quality present from SA to SA2 in their games.

Look at how well recieved the Sonic Mega Collection was. Look at the planned sequel with Sonic CD on. Surely the next logical step isn't too difficult to spot?

I enjoyed both Sonic Advance games and overall preferred the original to the sequel whose Techno Zone is the worst.zone.ever. They are both very playable and despite them both having dire bonus levels to get the chaos gems they are much better than any other recent Sonic effort.
