Cacophanus, if you're gonna quote me then quote me please ft:

as for Edge taking criticism. they've created their own niche, and they've cultivated their style over years and years. at this point if you don't like it, don't buy it. they probably couldn't care either way. they know who their readership is.

Why? I care how games journalism is developing and, subsequently, how the medium of games is perceived as a whole. I, nor anyone else, should want it represented by ignorant and repressed Oxford graduates, par example, who don't know their arse from their elbow.

That was in a review of PES2 and the idea was that if you wanted all the official names and up to date player rosters (FIFA) rather than truly excellent gameplay (PES2), then you deserve second best.

        Fair enought comment IMO.

I believe Edge and GamesTM are significantly different in their approach in gaming journalism, to warrant any direct comparison.

In my view, where Edge lets itself down, is it can come across extremly anal at times and doesn't seem to care if it alienates factions of it's readership. But it's reports and features are very well put together and solid good reading.

GamesTM is young, and hasn't had the luxury of 10 years of evolution. But for it to win the said award and read with genuine enthusiasm for its subject matter, can only be seen as very promising. Maybe there is too many spoilers, a too cluttered layout and too many jokes, but a balance is sure to come.

I personally find GamesTM more in line with my mind of thinking, in that games are FUN and are treated as such. Whereas Edge feels like it's above that, and would prefer to discuss a game or gamings implications on the real world, instead of the game itself. No bad thing.

How? Since when did validity on anything become negated through emotion?

Out of Paragon and Future, the former is the better employer. The editors listen to what you have to say, and also have the rather nice bonus of actually knowing what you are talking about (generally).

Are you getting any work at Future then?

Since your 'emotion' makes it hard for anybody to regard your opinions with anything but a pinch of salt.

Perhaps if you'd stated your contention with the magazine objectively instead of just calling its staff and anyone who opposed your position childish names (some of which were subsequently deleted, I might add...), I for one would've taken more of an interest in what you had to say.

You can still be objective whilst displaying emotion. Which is much better than displaying objectivity and actually delivering stymied crap, a la EDGE. Admittedly I could approach the whole shebang with more of an analytical facade, for ease of general consumption, but it really shouldn't be necessary on a message board as lucid as this one.

Cacophanus, you must concede that at the moment all you're doing is skirting around the issue, spouting bile. for the rest of us relatively unbiased posters we can point at Edge or Games Tm and say, the way they do that is ****, that's cool etc but personal insults against the staff and the publisher really doesn't get us anywhere, does it?

Well he's right, to an extent. I was amazed by the way the Edge staff used to speak to the people who keep them in business on their forums. Totally unprofessional.

The forum and the magazine are two different things.

Yes, Edge did sometimes come across a little too brusque (and sometimes condescending) on the forum, but it was justifiable for the most part, IMO. They created the forum for like-minded readers to discuss gaming, but fanboy playground culture started to take over.

As far as I'm concerned, most the forum problems could be attributed to many of the people who posted there and not Edge staff themselves.

Anyway, this isn't about the forum, it's about the mag. Don't cloud the issue.

Considering that an EDGE writer labelled one of Cacky's reviews as "a crock of ****" on their website, and that another privately contacted the senior management of this site in an attempt to get him sacked, I'd say Cacky has justification in feeling more than a little annoyed with the magazine right now.

Such behaviour wasn't exactly the epitome of professionalism.

OK Im tired of all this now, its gone on long enough.

There is no need at all for issues like this to be raised here once again, its history and no longer relevant. Im not having a go at you Concept (I know you had good intentions) or anyone else but Im going to close this thread now.
