If you could be downloading at maximum speed of 512Kbps for 24 hours, you would only get around 5GB of data, so no not 15GB a day.

I'm asking this purely out of interest, rather for any agenda, but do any of big downloaders (e.g. >1 gig a day) use their connection entirely legally or is it mostly piracy (games, film or TV)?

What is there out there availble to download legally that requires 15 gig a month?

I'm not trying to antagonise people, just interested.

A bit grey I think Stu

I think it's just the way bittorrent works, I could leave a single 200mb fansub downloading overnight and when I check back in the morning it will have uploaded 1.5gb.

I think I'm mostly legal, I earn enough money to buy the toys I want and downloading 50 part rar files seems like more hassle than it's worth. So I'm sure I'm under the 30gb per month limit, but as I haven't heard from BT about the upgrade I'll be checking out other isps anyway.

I have teh 1meg Received an email today dated the 17th (I've been working nights and only check my usual account as opposed to the main account) saying my activation would be on the 16th, how's that for hindsight.

So now I get to sit down and work out if I'm close to the 30gb limit

Eventually all the downloads will be capped.

                          It's fine by me

As long as they unlock more speed for everyone

The main problem with the internet is speed, not bandwidth.

If you fininsh a piece of work and need to email it, why should it take 2 hours
to transfer, why can't it arrive instantly.

Businesses time is greatly wasted if the day is spent transfering
files needlessly slow, or trying to focus on other things and having
an important transfer playing on your mind.

The specification of ADSL allows 15MB/S but everyone gets a fraction
of that because BT can't be arsed to lay proper cable cos the law states
cables only need to carry voice properly.

I reckon it's more likely they just limit it to screw with us though, BT think
they're some kind of big organisation that can dictate how much speed
people can have, they should get a big punch on the nose and give people
who are willing to pay a fair price a fair service.

                            Total nonsense.

I tell you there are some howlers in that post. "The problem with the internet is speed not bandwidth". How do you think speed and bandwidth are related? More speed -> More bandwidth, less speed -> less bandwidth.

1: BT could offer higher bandwidth speeds if it replaced cables, most of which are 30-40 years old, but the cost of doing this would mean that your 512K service would be 150quid a month.
2: ADSL also has limitations on distance, so no matter how good the copper cable is you will still have bandwidth limitations.
3: More bandwidth means that content providers need more bandwidth which means they need to pay more also [which means advertising goes up or you have to pay to access sites].

                            Regards,
                            Neil.

With profits to the end of April 2003 of over 4.3 billion ? Im sure that replacing cables could be done without increasing rates considerably. But they dont appear willing to spend money on anything so far as I can tell.
