Thinking about Pipex and that unlimited thing for ?23.99 a month. Are they a good ISP? Any additional costs in setting up with them, or can i just use the stuff i had from BT? And are there any other ISPs you suggest?

I have 2 computers connected to a BT router (probably the reason my data transfer's high, my parents use the net upstairs)
The fact that the router's BT shouldn't matter, if I moved to a different ISP?
Either your post wasn't clear enough or your maths is poor. 650mb in a day would mean that in a month (taking it as 30 days) you would use 19.5Gb. You would reach the 15gb limit in 23 days, which is far longer than a week.

Like it or not download caps are a necessary evil of everyone having broadband. How else do you stop scabs downloading movies all day (in the process slowing down everyone else's connections)?

I agree that caps should be set in place, but I still think paying ?35 for 30GB a month is fairly stingy.

      50GB is far more realistic.

Just spoke to them this morning, apparantly there's been a huge demand for the 1mb upgarde, so they have been slow to send the emails out!

I was told that I'll get the email by the end of the week.

Well, as of making that post i'd used 650mb, which was kind of 6pm-ish, so I kind of figured by the end of the day it'd at least get to 1gb. This morning I looked at Netmeter and it was already at 1.34gb.

?35 for 30gb is a ripoff compared to that Pipex thing which is unlimited for ?23 a month. I'll think about Wanadoo in the meantime, depends how my Netmeter testing goes. I think I should be fairly near the 30gb mark in a month, but probably not over it.

My dad did raise a good point though - my brother is home from uni and he's a major downloader, I dont download as much stuff, so if I ran Netmeter when he goes back to Uni we'd have a better picture of how much we use.

I'm in a bit of a ****e situation with my connection, i'm a home 500 and would like 1000 and 30gb but i'm too far from the exchange to get 1000. So looks like i'm stuck with 500. I could go with cable but their upload speed is only 128K which is mega ****e.

                Dear Customer,

Thank you for placing your upgrade order for the BT Yahoo! 1Mb service.
Your order has been received and is currently being processed. We will
send you an e-mail to let you know your activation date as soon as it
                has been confirmed.

Due to the positive response, following the recent price changes to the
BT Yahoo! Broadband services, we are currently experiencing high demand
from customers wanting to upgrade to the BT Yahoo! 1Mb service. We are
doing our best to deliver all orders as quickly as possible but due to
the high volumes and in case you haven't already received your
confirmation there may be a small delay with some orders.

We assure you that any delays will be kept to a minimum.

                Best regards,

                BT Yahoo! Internet team
Think I applied at the end of last week, so a full week before they replied. And it's only a 'thanks for your application' email anyway

The 1mbit service from Telewest is 256K, I am sure of it.

And on a side note, download limits are a joke. I want to be downloading whatever and whenever. What the hell is the point in having faster internet if I can't use it?? I could download 15Gb a month on 56k and yet I get I am suppose to get cut off after 30Gb for 1mbit broadband. Thats only double as fast, not 20 times faster. Get rid of the download limits, they suck.

Personally i think it stinks of profiteering. I suspect they want capping to bring back the glory days of pay-as-you-go on dialup. And to suggest heavy users are somehow clogging the system rings more than a bit hollow considering the speed this technology is moving at...first rolled out at 256, then 512, then 1mb, and can't regular home users get 3mb on blueyonder.

But if everyone is caining torrents all day long, you need the expensive infrastructure to cope.

I really don't mind paying a little bit extra if it means not being capped. However, BT is quite expensive and the only reason I'm sticking with them at the moment is down to them not enforcing it and having had very little in the way of downtime. I think come 2005, ?30 for a 1Mb with a 30GB cap won't look so competitive, hence BT changing their pricing structure.

                              Regards
                              Marty

But i don't think everyone is caining torrents all day long. Sure, every user new to broadband will go on a downloading spree, but very few of them will bother after that, and of the ones who do, only a persistent few will cope with the ups and downs of everchanging p2p clients. I bet if BT released usage stats, only a tiny minority of its users would go over the limit, which could easily be absorbed by the majority who stay well under it. Not to mention the extra bandwidth made available by improving technology.

I'm not with BT (on blueyonder), so it doesnt effect me, and i don't even download films, but i think it stinks of corporate greed. Especially when broadband is sold largely on its ability to provide media rich content.
