Thing is, we'll all have to run doom3 at some point (and/or HL2) because you can bet the engines will be licensed to buggery. Upgrading from 9800 to x800/6800 is a bit decadent, though ;p

But if I could I would....

I'm actually in a real PAIN situation.

        Current RIG: Dell Gx260, 1.8Ghz P4 1Gb 266MhzRAM, AGP 4x and Radeon 9800Pro.

The IT support group have asked me to test the new Dell model for a new home office build. So I am now getting:

        Del Gx280 p4 3.2Ghz, 512MB DDR2400 Ram, SATA HDD, and .........

        FACKKKKKING NEW PCI Express craaaaappppp!

So then, I can't use my 9800Pro, and I have to have the PC sat under my desk, and wait for PCI Express versions of the 6800Gt or X800 XT to come into my price range. (i.e 1 year) AND buy more Ram for the thing.

So on one hand I get a new PC. On the other, I need to spend tonnes of cash to get it useable.

When you "Configure" it for corporate customers the best video card is a crappy x600 (i.e a Radeon 9600) and I not using that!

        *sigh*

        Sorry for the rant!

Oh well, it will run Office 2K3 well enough!!

          arf

More random musings, heh. I just recalled that in the doom3 Icon vids (they're on suprnova somewhere, just interviews with the various id staff and game footage), id have obviously already started their next project. Quake4 is contracted out to Raven etc, so apparently it's going to be something new, a change of direction for id.

          Very interesting.

Probably back to the project that was put on hold to do d00m3

As a side note to all the 'Me-Too!' graphics card talk, I hope everyone's got their 5.1/6.1 setups properly configured and positioned - apparently that's where the real impact is to be felt.

To damn right, 5.1 in a game like this will make a huge difference. Even in Farcry it **** me up countless times (saving me in the process of doing so though - no more enemies creeping up behind me :P).

I actually have a 6.1 speaker setup but only a 5.1 sound card Still the rear centre just helps distribute the rear channel sound.

                  OcUk have this one offer:

Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 ?72

                  Is it any good?

And for a cheap speaker setup they have:

                  Creative Inspire 7.1 T7700 Speakers ?81

                  Could this give good sound?

And would it play DVD films with 7.1 too? I guess I would have a jump wire from the back of the IDE DVD player to the sound card?

I have never bothered with sound cards, but thought it would be cool.

I understand that all Doom3 sound is done on the CPU, but surely you need a 7.1/5.1 card to get the right sounds to the right speakers? Confused... I assume 7.1 speakers don't all get plugged into the one socket?

Multi channel sound on DVDs is digitally encoded, so it won't come out the back of the DVDrom. Nearly all software DVD players that I've seen support the multi channel capabilities of soundcards.

As for connections, depends if it's analogue or digital 5.1. On the ATX panel at the back you'll have 3.5mm jacks for front left/right, rear left/right and sub/centre, for analogue surround setups. You'll also often find an optical link for connecting to your amp for digital surround.

Only have cambridge 4.0 speakers personally, which is a bit of a waste with the nforce2(s) heh :/

You think that's a waste? My 5.1 nForce 2 setup is connected to plain stereo, because I've nowhere in the computer room to fit a surround setup.

Its why, even though my box will handle Doom 3 ok, I'm half tempted by the XBox release, which could be played through the Pioneer/Celestion 5.1 setup in the lounge.

                        1.) Sweet

2.) So the cheaper speakers/cards have standard analogue jacks, funky expensive ones have "Optical" jacks? (Like teh one on teh PS2!?!)

Sorry for the n00b questions.... RAID/Firewall1/LDAP/TCP I can do..... Soundcards have never been something I have looked further than an IRQ and IO assignment for...

Just been looking at those speakers mate, the 80 quid ones are 7.1 sure enough, and will connect via about 4 3.5mil jacks. I'm guessing they'll work just fine with soundcards which only support 5.1, you won't be able to use some of the speakers is all.

The next item down on that page is about 170 quid and the digital version of said speakers, with their own decoder. That will undoubtedly take a TOSlink cable from the back of your motherboard/soundcard (if you have it) to the decoder, like the PS2.

Would have to sample the difference, but one assumes you won't have the fidelity afforded by digital sound on the cheaper analogue setup. It's a pain in the arse (for me) really - as with Mid, all my 5.1 guff is down in the livingroom, and I'd love to have the PC wired up to it but it just ain't gonna happen. I guess the alternative would be the digital 7.1s there or similar.

                            Oh PANTS!

I thought Creative Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS 7.1 ?72 was 7.1! Talk about misleading if it only supports 5.1!!

                            Not very helpful is it!

                            Thanks for your help.

Arf sorry, I meant most soundcards (including built in ones) support 5.1, if that Audigy says it does 7.1, I'm sure it does 7.1

Not seen it myself, but I'm guessing the back of the Audigy is a plethora of 3.5 jacks and a TOSlink thing.
