There's no pleasing some people. Honestly, what did you expect? It's DOOM ffs, a corridor shooter.

Personally, I'm loving it. Great atmosphere, plenty of shocks and state of the art visuals. I don't doubt Half Life 2 will be a more innovative experience, but so what?Doom is what Doom is, a linear corridor shooter set in near total darkness with enemies coming from all angles.

The only slight complaint I have is just that the textures, even on HIGH mode are still pretty low res. They look like Xbox textures, not PC. Still, I'm sure Carmack knows best and they're that size for a very good reason.

Runs reasonably well for me on my system. After some experimentation I settled on a compromise of visual quality vs frame rate and am running on HIGH detail at 1024x768 with 4x FSAA. Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb, 3ghz P4, 1gb RAM, Win XP.

Played it on a friends machine earlier, didn't notice any slowdown apart from when
more than 1 monster at a time started whacking me up close.

Brilliant game, after the first 4 levels you really get to appreciate the work thats
gone into it, plentiful with well thought out levels with almost no time fillers like
in other games. The sound stays at a kind of ambient level throughout, more refined than the all out action of say Painkiller. The settings I played the game at I would say are the best. With shadowing on you miss alot of detail as it's not the best kind of shadowing I've seen (weak compared to Turbine Teams Self Shadowing), so turning it off is recommended for best enjoyment.

          Game settings:
1280 x 1024 all settings maximum minus shadow and aa

          Driver settings:
DirectX 9b, Catalyst 3.6 (Truform Forced, 16x Anisotropics Forced, Max txtr quality)

          My friends machine:

          Radeon 9500 Pro, Athlon 2400XP, 1GB Crucial RAM (CAS 2-2-7-2), Audigy 2

Shadows look great to me. They're the usual hard edged stencil buffer stuff but work great especially in the later levels when the lighting is far more dynamic.

Just got the plasma gun. Makes light work of those damn spiders.

Gone back down to a res of 1024x768 and added 2 xq AA because the jaggies on light objects were doing my head in

I'm quite impressed that your friend was able to play it fairly well on a poor ol' Athlon 2400XP with a 9500 Pro.

lol i bet this looks poor on the Xbox, i just have this feeling

It's already been shown on the Xbox at E3, looking rather good with a healthy frame rate.

No doubt it'll be cut down, but you won't notice it as much on a TV. As long as the frame rate is better than Deus Ex 2.

                      athlon xp 2600+
768mb of kingston and crucial ddr 400
                      radeon 9600 se

it runs absolutly gorgeous on mine, im getting 60fps but i lose a few here and there which isn't no biggy. i have it set on medium with a resolution of 800x600

I'll be running it on my good ol'

                        Athlon xp 2200
                        1024gb DDR33
                        Radeon 9700 Pro

I'm hoping to get it running at least on medium settings at 800x600, maybe 1024x768 at a push though.

                          I've got:
                          athalon 3000+
512 meg of somekind of ram ddr 400 probably
                          radeon 9700pro

and it runs fine in 1024x768 with vsync on

Tried deathmatch and its great in an oldschool way, basically identical in function to Quake 3 Team Arena, so its all there, has an extremely tense 5 minute bout with my housemate, and with the reduced level size and "oldschoolness" of the weapons it was great.

About the game in general it really is super average, with minimal funtionality i.e. no leaning, no secondary functions, which is kinda cool in an "oldschoolness" kinda way.

High quality is much smoother than medium quality on my system

                            Athlon 1800+ (1.5ghz)
                            512mb DDR333
                            Raedon 9700 (np)

I just came across this link: http://www.techreport.com/onearticle.x/7133
It's a "Quick Tweak Guide for Doom 3"...

Perhaps it solves a few of the problems some of us have (not me *phew*).
