    Wishful thinking, I'm afraid.

Why would any game need to support it when MS controllers let you use the headset fine? Such a feature is only relevant to those (like us) who want to use PS2 controllers via converters, and MS or games companies are hardly going to go out of there way to help are they?

Someone with some techincal trickery needs to mess with a magixbox to make it work with the headset. Perhaps it is only a matter of swapping some parts with the mem card port of a cheap 3rd pad?

well the joybox and magicbox both HAVE ports, so they'd work just like regular ms controller mem card ports

i can see why sf3 and pro evo 4 would implement that idea mentioned, and if they do implement these features then they'd have noticed that sf3 wll be played by many stick owners, and pro evo 4 will be played alot with ps2 pads.

      makes sense

but then we don't program games eh?

I'm not sure what you mean. The magicbox lets you plug the headset in and give a green light, but doesn't put any sound through it. Therefore, it isn't working like a regular ms controller mem card port. Or am I missing something?

ok here's what i've gathered from trawling through the internet about xbox controllers:

any controller that has a mem card port operates like this:

          1) there's a standard usb hub onboard
          2) the 'controller' (i.e. the buttons, dpad, sticks, triggers and their controller chip) is hardwired to one of the hub's 'ports' - thus there's ALWAYS a controller hooked up to the hub (unless you physically desoldered the wires or whatever)
          3) the mem card slots are also ports on the hub

so the hub has 3 ports

now, in the case of a magicbox/joybox, they will operate in the following fashion:

          1) there's a standard usb hub onboard
          2) the converter chip for the ps2 port is hardwired to the hub
          3) there's a mem card port that is one of the hub's ports

however, as you lot keep mentioning, the headset won't work with it

reason i'm confused as to how this might be is because of the whole usb principle - if it's usb then it'll be recognised as something. thus, if you plug a regular mem card into the port (or a 3rd party one) and it is recognised AND works (try copying stuff back and forth) then it sounds baffling as to why a headset wouldn't work with it.

However, there is one thing that i need to check, though. Lemme open my headset port and see...brb

What happened when you opened your headset port then?

              i can't find it

but basically what i'm looking for is whether the yellow wire plays any part in this issue

              confused?

well, usb uses 4 wires - red, green, white and black (red and black are 5v and gnd, green and white are for data) but the xbox usb has an extra yellow wire which remains largely unused. opening my mem card reveals the connector for the yellow wire is joined to that of ground thus implying it isn't used for that.

it also isn't used for the actual joypads. thus, noone really knows what it's for

if anyone has a headset connector that they don't mind opening (it's just two screws) if they could post here whether any of the connections at the connector end are joined together that'd be sweet

Look at me, I joined up just to help with this! (That's how desperate I am to get hold of a decent converter.)

Anyway, I took the thing apart today, and there are 5 connections. I took a pic of the front and back:

                Hope this helps.

EDIT: Having said this, it doesn't look like the second from bottom connection (looking at the front image), is connected to anything. I doubt this board has any internal layers, so it really looks like it's just the 4 pins with no funny business.

no i agree - i doubt it would have any internal layers

so anyway, i'm wondering why exactly these headsets wouldn't work with the converter...

see the problem is, i have the headset dongle like in the pic but i don't have a headset as such - i was planning on hacking up a nokia handsfree headset i got lying around, as the connector is the same size (but the headset has two earphones and a mic, not one, so has three rings on the headphone jack) but i've no idea which wire is connected to which part of the jack...

                  damnit i'm waffling again
