i recently did a partial reinstall of xp (where it keeps the settings) and since then it's having major problems with my ipod video.
the ipod is recognised as a device but doesn't appear as a drive. after some faffing around trying to get ipod updater to talk to it, i decided to pop into disk management. sure enough, the fat32 drive was present and healthy but without a drive letter. gave it one and lo and behold the drive sort of appeared (when you right-click and choose 'Open') but would not appear in the My Computer drive list.
first thing i did was quickly copy off a bunch of xvids that were on there (in random folders - all the music/ipod vids are on the pc anyway as it's set to auto update) then after some more fiddling i managed to get the updater to recognise it and did a software restore.
still the problem persists, however. at first i thought the ipod was at fault, but when i plugged it into my dad's pc it worked fine - drive letter, itunes recognition, the works.
gonna do a proper format/reinstall in a sec to see what happens (in need of one now anyway cos of all the clutter).
the moral of this story? i dunno, but if you ever get into a situation where your ipod appears as a usb drive but doesn't appear in 'my computer' and you get scared, pay Disk Management a visit and give it a drive letter. handy in emergencies
