The front is hard, clear plastic with a thin cover over the wheel. Everywhere else has the all-in-one rubbery covering with a flap for the sync port. Not that I've tried but I think it would bounce from a drop off a table

Got the new Shuffle for my mum for Christmas, and I cant for the life of me get it working. It must be broken. Tried it on two computers now, installs the drivers automatically, then open iTunes and from then on in theres trouble.
The iPod usually gets detected and the name comes up, so when I click on it it takes ages to load the page and goes really slowly. Eventually it loads to the playlist screen, I try to add music to it, takes a few minutes even when I add just one track and then says "Unable to transfer file to iPod as the disc is unreadable" or something along those lines.
Tried un and reinstalling the drivers several times, my iTunes is updated to the newest version, so I dont know why its doing it. Sound like a duff unit?

I just got one and have been having exactly the same problem. This is my first real experience of Apple products and counter to what everybody tells me about ease of use I have to say that THEY SUCK! User friendly my arse.
Here's how I solved it:
1. Unplug the Shuffle and turn off iTunes.
2. Open Windows Services and stop the iPod service.
3. Attach the Shuffle.
4. It should appear in My Computer as a drive (E:\ in my case).
5. Format the bastard.
6. Restart the iPod service.
7. Start iTunes.
8. Let it auto fill your Shuffle.
9. While it's doing that, switch to options and click the "Enable disk use" setting (may have to scroll down).
During my travels researching this I also came across recommendations for http://www.mediamonkey.com/ as an alternative to iTunes, which I haven't looked at yet but may be worth investigating.

after a brief tinkering with ipod linux on my 30gb video (1st gen) it formatted the fat32 drive and left my ipod buggered. the linux worked fine on it, though, just not the ipod's own software.
anyhoo, i have the latest itunes but i want to put my old ipod software on there (17/11/2005) as i prefer it to the newer software versions.
i installed the updater but it crashes when it's run. also (and this scared me) when trying the restore the firmware backup made during the linux install, it crashed straight away as well.
the ipod is running as normal right now, but with the latest software (1.2.1) which i don't want.
while the ipod was still in disk mode i did a restore through itunes again just to make sure and it's fine now.
at work, our machine with the latest itunes would kick up a fuss if the old updaters were run (message appeared saying to use itunes)
is there a way around this? ipodwizard won't help as the ipod updater itself keeps crashing.
as a stop-gap i'll probably just try running the updater on my dad's machine as i think he doesn't have/use itunes, but in future, is there a way to run the ipod updaters even if you have the newest itunes installed?
