I've got a 2mb Nildram ADSL line. They recently sent me this letter though which will probably mean that I will leave them soon. Also someone recommend me an ISP with no caps...

          Dear Customer,

This is a system generated e-mail to inform you that you have used 25GB of Peak Period (8am until Midnight) data transfer so far this month - half way to our Fair Use Policy quota of 50GB. Until July this is running as a soft limit in order for you to monitor your current level of data transfer and either change your usage, or upgrade to our Professional services. Information on our Professional Broadband services can be found at http://broadband.nildram.net

From July, once you use the Fair Use quota, your connection speed will be reduced to 64Kbps during both Peak and Off-Peak periods, with the option to regain normal speeds for an additional fee - at ?0.99 per additional 1GB (charged in advance, in 2GB increments).

          Regards,

          Nildram Broadband Team

I left Tiscali for pipex after I got a similar email (30gb though, not 50). It was actually the last straw in a list of things - Tiscali are rubbish - but it looks like limits might be on the way for most ISPs I guess...

phillai, Bulldog don't cap you in anyway at all...

Any isp which does, even if it's a huge cap, will never get my business.

Caps go against the principle of 'always on' broadband anyway. The bastards advertise it as such but then slowly bring in restrictions meaning that it will end up like dial up.

I'm sorry lads, but having an 8mb broadband connection is like having an 18 inch penis. It looks really impressive, everyone is really jealous of it, but how often do you get to use all of it?

If you use torrents or P2P, then the higher the better.

At work I'm capped to about 1MByte/sec upload and 4MByte/sec download. Which is nice.

Is 256 kps upload suitable for gaming or will it need to be higher? .

Most isp's are quoting speeds of 256 for u/l although I would prefer a faster u/l speed tbh.

I think Bulldog offer 400K upload, though depends on locale

256 is much more than enough, unless you want to host big games.

I don't think any ISPs offer anything over 256 (not much over anyway), unless you live in london atm...I think there's a technical reason why they can't, though I'm no expert.
