LCD/Plasma/CRT/DLP - questions

I guess none of you have seen an Oppo then - on every display I've used, it's made a nice improvement to image quality. (not yet hooked it up to this Toshiba though)

I got a nice surprise when testing things on my 37WLT68 today, which makes a change:

Yes, the Oppo Andrew's talking about uses a Faroudja deinterlacing and upscaling solution. I swear it makes a small but worthwhile difference.

Of course if anyone claims it can create extra detail, it's nonsense; the point is to stop the picture from getting any worse.

I can't see the picture but I presume that is a pictire of the 360 dash saying 1080p?

I would recommend the Tosh 360 apart from one reason...it is rubbish as a DVD player! It regularly pauses and locks up for a few seconds ft: Image quality is fantastic but I could never use a DVD player that pauses 2-3 times during a DVD.

I think there's equally good DVD players that would work without that problem though (Samsung make some very good ones, as do Panasonic and Sony). If you can afford the extra then the Oppo 971 is just about one of the best machines you can buy.

If you're buying a new player and are on a ?100 budget then, yeah, I'd suggest getting one with HDMI as it will look great. For the price you'll get a fantastic image. Don't let it upscale the image though as it's just not necessary. With your WLT68, just let that scale the image and it will do a great job

Are you saying the 360's DVD player locks up? I haven't found that with mine, it plays just fine.

No, I mean the Toshiba SD360 locks up. It's their most recent budget DVD player. I've not used the Xbox360 as a DVD player yet. I tried a few films and it seemed pretty good, IMO

Had a wee browse on the net with no luck, where's the best place i could get one of these mystical Oppo's?
I assume they're capable of playing all region DVDs and have optical out?

Http://www.oppodigital.com but I don't think they're allowed to sell them in Europe anymore due to some RoHS thing, but I've been thinking about selling mine, as I just don't watch DVDs anymore though, if you're interested.

I could well be sir, i assume it's multiregion and has a digital out so i can connect it with an optical lead to my 5.1 system?
Which is it, the DV971H? How much would you be looking for, i'm on a slightly limited budget due to buying the WLT68 Shall we take this to PM

It's the DV971H, and yes it is multi-region (and can be manually set to one if necessary, although I've never had to) with both optical and coax outputs.

I think it was around ?170 it ended up costing ($50 shipping, ?40 tax) but PM me with an offer. (I'm never very good at pricing things)

Are there specific HDMI 1.1, 1.2 1.3 cables? Or are all HDMI cables the same?

All the same, the HDMI 1.3 1.2 stuff just refers to the software passing through the cable as it were.

Component looks so good over the Bravia that I've gone back to using it with the 360. Frees up the VGA connection since I don't possess a splitter right now.

Weird that blue tint thing on the GOW pic, it did exactly the same on my screen when i tried take a picture, must be GOW
