There's tips on manually calibrating on AV Forums, so I'm told. I asked about the screen over there and they said it wasn't too bad but had a strange aspect ratio (16:10).

These Samsung units seem popular, maybe it is down to the price, just trying to get as many opinions in as poss before I splurge.

You'll need access to the service menu. Just remember to make note of all the presets before you touch anything.

Well I haven't seen everything out there, but the Toshiba gets my vote.

Anyone know of any reputable companies that have got the 42WLT68 in-stock?

Small word of warning - according to Toshiba this set is only 1366x768 res. The 42WLT66 is 1920x1080. The 66 has one less HDMI, but if you want so called 'full HD' it might be worth considering. I have the 66 and it's a great TV.

im really confused again - i'll be needing a new Telly in the next week

I think its between the 37" WLT68 or the BRAVIA W

I was looking at the 47WLT66 but read that it cant do 1080p only 1080i, considering its resolution thats pretty disapointing.

Heres hoping they release a 47" version in the WLT68 series.

Yes, the sets "only" have a 1366x768 resolution. Unless you're sitting within 4-5ft or so from a 37-42" TV, you will not be seeing 1080p, fact.

Honestly, there are so many more important factors to image quality than resolution, and as far as future-proofing goes with 1080p, if anything the Toshiba is more future-proof as it has 3x HDMI that accept 1080p and can do it over Component. I've yet to see a 1080p native panel that hasn't had serious motion issues and bad processing, although I haven't seen the Sony W/X's yet, as WCG-CCFL is an instant deal-breaker for me.

Some people seem obsessed with resolution, even if they can't see it, just like so many people want HDMI v1.3 when it is totally meaningless at this stage.

You have to wonder why Toshiba, Samsung and Philips have had 1920x1080 panels yet their latest "high-end" models have dropped back down to 1366x768?

If you like / don't mind WCG-CCFL, and it doesn't have motion issues, I'm sure the Sony W is a very nice set, but for my money I would rather have the Toshiba, as it's by far the sharpest HDTV I've seen / owned. I wouldn't factor in the resolution as a decider for buying either of these though.

Resolution is an interesting thing, and I agree other factors are more important, but I *can* tell the difference and appreciate the improvement.

For example, my old Xbox Media Center can run 720p or 1080i. In 720p the on-screen text is noticeably blocky around the edges, but at 1080i it's much better. Or watching Planet Earth on BBC HD, when the credits come up the razor sharp clarity of them is something I just wouldn't see at 720p.

I can imagine that kind of clarity will come through with a CG movie too, as they should be flawless transfers and not suffer from any camera focus issues or film grain. I'd love to see something like The Incredibles or A Scanner Darkly on HD-DVD and go between 1080 and 720...

That's not the same thing though, you're comparing the two different resolution sources on a 1080p panel, I'm talking about comparing the same source on two different panels. Extra resolution at the source is always a good thing for video, but it matters far less once you get to the display as long as it can handle the signal.

My previous LCD was a samsung and it was alright, I was gonna go for another one until I saw it running next to a Sony and a Toshiba, my eyes were opened. Seriously, don't bother with the Samsungs. Besides the poor SD performance, the picture processing cannot be turned off and tends to do more harm than good

i've just gotten back from JL - they didnt have the WLT68 - but they had the W set-up via Blu-Ray 1080p - and I thought it looked outstanding.

ive asked them to price match with Empire Direct and they will get back to me tomorrow.

                              but what exactly is WCG-CCFL?
