Viewing angles on a half decent LCD TV will be much better than viewing angles on pretty much any PC screen, even moreso laptop screen. It won't be anything close to that.

Presumably you place the screen at normal sofa viewing height. What happens when you stand up e.g. while playing Wii? For example on my laptop's lcd screen, if you move your head upwards or downwards, the screen goes darker and the colours all change a bit.
While the Toshiba doesn't have the best left/right viewing angles, standing up makes very little difference to the image onscreen.

Laptop LCDs are generally appalling for viewing angles, there's really no comparison.

I will disagree there - it all depends on the quality of the scaling in your display. (and personally I found the BRAVIAs to be very soft) The Wii in 480i/p on my 37WLT68 looks virtually identical to running in 480p on my 480p native projector.

So much for me trying to stay out of these topics now.

EDIT: Seeing as I'm here, I've read back through the last couple of pages.

It's 3:2 and 2:2 cadence detection - basically it will improve the image quality on film content. It's best left on at all times. The only reason to disable it is if you're playing some interlaced games and are having issues. (it'll probably look like the framerate is going crazy)

MPEG NR blurs the whole image to try and blend the "blocks" together and make MPEG artefacts less noticeable. DNR will remove "grain" from the image. (but may introduce smearing to the image - I'm not sure what Toshiba's implementation is like) I prefer to have both off.

Thanks very much, still loving the set
'fraid not. Best way to select inputs on the set is to hit "ok" when you're on anything other than the DTV tuner and it'll bring up a menu to pick from.

The Bravia handles 480p better than all the LCDs I've personally seen up to now but that doesn't mean it's close to a good CRT. It's simple for me - LCDs in general don't like to upscale well and they pale in comparison to what I see on my old TV with standard def.

My eyes can clearly tell the difference - CRTs hide imperfections much, much better with pre-current gen consoles (current gen being 360 onward).

I had my Toshiba 42WLT66 delivered yesterday and im very happy with it. Its a dominating set especially compared to my old crt which has now been 'hand-me-downed' to my girlfriend. I went all Homer Simpson when getting rid of the old set. Weve had some good times me and that tv .

In regards to the 42WLT66 are there certain tweaks I can make to the settings that anyone here would recommend? At the momement my only HD source is my xbox360 via component with an upscaling DVD player in transit. The 360 HD-DVD player will have to wait till next payday.

You could try this thread for some ideas, personally I didn't go for any of these and use picture setting 1 which is built into the set for use with the 360. Some may find it too bright, but it seems perfect for that at least (to my eyes anyway)

I posted my settings for this set earlier in this thread. Probably quite a few pages back by now...

It must be stressed that the correct settings are the ones you like the most.
Use other peoples settings as a guide sure, but do feel free to tweak to yuor taste. Don't force yourself to use a setting you don't completely like just because it matches other peoples tastes.

There are too many discussions on AV sites and forums about what it 'correct' and 'incorrect', and what people 'should' be using.

I found that the Bravia was quite poor at deinterlacing things that were moving quickly. I never go to try and 480p content on it, but I'm sure that looked better.

Very strange you say that tbh, I've been very impressed with it's 480i performance using my PS2. Playing FFXII to death on it right now.

It was in particuarly amplitude I noticed it , and psyvariar to a lesser extent, although that refreshes so quickly I'm not really suprised by that one. My WLT68 only just manages it.

                      Amplitude was pretty horrendous though.

That sounds like it's incorrectly detecting it as being "film" based content and performing either 2:2 or 3:2 pulldown - Guitar Hero wreaks havoc on poorer displays in some stages, jumping in/out of film mode at random. This is why it's such a good thing that you can disable it on the WLT68's.

if you can imagine what I mean when I say badly encoded Quicktime video windowblinds effect over certain moving objects. That is about the closest I can describe it in text.

In amplitude it was over the little nodules you were meant to hit, the same as the ones in guitar heroes.

for those who don't know what I mean I just found a picture

The technical terms are "combing", "mouse teeth" or more commonly, interlacing artefacts

I've never seen a 32" LCD with a 1920x1080 panel before. I would check those specs elsewhere, make sure they're correct.
