Although I haven't used either, the general view on most places is that avoid the Samsung if you can afford better. They do seem to be fault prone, and have arguably some of the worst support thrugh Scart.

Having said that, for the price they are sold, I don't think any reputable manufacturer can even touch Samsung for what they offer (a HD ready LCD, with great VGA support)

        Thanks.

VGA and Component support is what interests me, as I won't be using the television I buy for anything other than gaming. I've heard about the tearing issues, which is why I'm slightly apprehensive on Samsung, though if they've been resolved by now I have more to consider.

Yeah, for that, I guess Samsung is probably the way to go. Spend the money you save on the leads

The tearing has definitely been resolved on all new shipments. If you do by any chance get it, Samsung can upgrade the fw, so no biggie. Get in fast though, I've heard these are being replaced by newer (more expensive) sets.

Samsungs are supermely popular because they are great quality for the price. They are actually the screens MS use on their 360 demo pods.
But yeah, there are better screens if your willing to pay the extra.

I'll be honest, if they let me choose another set when I take this back, I'm paying extra and getting a 32" Samsung.

Indeed get in there, the 41 series have been replaced by the 51 series (although its only a cosmetic change) and the price difference between these models can be as much as ?200.

I did a helluva lot of research before I bought my screen and I struggled to find anything that matched the performance for the price. But as shakey jake said, when you get to the 32" and upwards sizes you can get better performing sets for a smidge more money.

There's a 61 series as well now. Not positive but i think there the Milano range.

In case anyone's interested, I received my 24" widescreen CRT monitor and it is fantastic. A really quality piece of equipment (it should be, it would have cost ?2k when new) and is the best monitor I have ever used including LCDs. There is absolutely no problems with geometry and the image is rock solid.

Have a picture of Amped 2 running in 720p for company ......

I'd get the Samsung. Amazing value for the performance. It'll be perfect for the usages you suggest. The Samsung R41s are also the most aesthetically attractive screens around, in my opinion.

That's pretty cool... are you connecting your XBox to that with a transcoder, or does it have a Component in?

Brats - thats very nice where did you find it was it a bargin? do you have to set the refresh rate like normal VGA input?

                        Comment

I'm using a X2VGA transcoder with my US XBox. I've tried games at both 480p and 720p and both work fine. I've also set the resolution of my PC to 1080p at 60hz and again it lapped it up.

No good for 1080i though as it can't do interlaced, but I prefer progressive signals anyway.

I bought it on Ebay for ?250. There are usually a couple on there going for that kind of price. Crazy when you think 2 years ago this monitor would have been ?2k new.

You don't have to set the refresh rate, you just plug in your console that supports VGA and you're off .

That's cool. I use a similar device, the VDigi VD-Z3. Does the same thing, but works on all Component sources as opposed to just the XBox. Came with a free XBox Component cable with optical output too.

I use it on my LCD TV as I seem to get better results than through Component native (yeah, wierd) - rocks. I tend to play games in 720p max, my screen being 1366x768... but I do run XBMC in 1080i and it's stunning.

Transcoders are perfect for people wanting to play consoles like the 360, but don't want to make the jump to a new screen just yet.
