I'd imagine most games won't be properly taking advantage of 1080i (or 1080p if that's possible) for ages anyway.

Think I'll be getting hold of the Samsung soon while they are still going cheap. The problem with HDTV to a novice like myself, is that it's technical term overload. I don't have a clue about the right component cables to pick for a start.

Ok...so the fact that this tv can only display 1024x720 means it cannot actually do true 720p (since it is scaled?), and so it isn't really meeting the requirements for the HD Ready badge. Which brings me back to my original question: isn't that misleading? Or is the ntsc-uk guide wrong in saying it needs a 1280x720 resolution to do 720p?

I'm not interested in that particular TV, just curious.

The HD Ready badge is confusing the hell out of me, would much rather them just say exactly what the frigging TV's can do! The Samsung LE26R41BDX's manual has no mention anywhere that it can do true 720p, despite the fact that the information is there if you know what you are looking for. In fact, nowhere on the 'net does it say this TV can do 720p, just 1366x768 resolution.

The Hitachi 42PD6600 is an exceptional Plasma at a nice price. Supports 720p and 1080i through HDMI port.

Not entirely definitive, but I think it's fairly obvious the LE26R41BDX does support 720p. Forum responses to the unit here would also assert this.

So when it does run in 720p, does it switch resolution to 1280x720, or downscale from 1366x768?

(edit - upscale to 1366x768...wush knew what I meant!)

Sorry for all the daft questions by the way

It upscales to 1366x768, which is in no way a bad thing, supposedly.

                I'm as muddled as you.

                I'd presume it'd switch to 1280x720.

                Edit: Already answered.

Okay then guys... component cables. Which to get?

I've seen component cables for the PS2 selling for under ?10 in the UK, but elsewhere in this thread, people have been talking about spending loads on them. What are the ones to go for (PS2, Xbox) and where?

Preferably in the UK. I don't fancy importing cables from Play Asia and the like.

                    Heh, welcome to my world

I can't see how 1366x768 is a good resolution if it is upscaling (streching?) the image.

JVC's own booklet for the LT32DS6 clearly says it can be used for gaming (it has a pic of a generic games console being hooked up to it) and unless it specifically states somewhere that it shouldn't be used for gaming they haven't got a leg to stand on.
Nope, Bought in in The Netherlands (where I live) at a highstreet shop called "Expert". Last time I bought anything there in my life....

Unfortunately, it only shows these kinds of artifacts on *some* ps2 games and *some* ps1 games, NOT on dvd movies, not on xbox or gamecube, ALL snes games/saturn games/megadrive games/n64 games in 60Hz. It also shows it in 50Hz on Ico for instance, but it's barely noticable then because of the black borders occupying the deformed area of the picture.

Is it just NTSC or does it do it in PAL 60 aswell?

I've been wondering about this myself. The Xbox 360 (for example) outputs 1280x720 and the TV stretches it up to 1366x768. Whenever I've read about it on forums, it's always been said that it's nothing to worry about. Surely if it is scaling the image, even slightly, you're going to lose the absolute pin-sharpness of the native resolution. I guess it might not be noticable during anti-aliased gameplay but what about text or line graphics on menus etc? Surely the best you can hope for is between little to no loss of quality. It can't create detail that isn't there.

I knocked up a little test image from an x360 screenshot. It might not be very accurate given a graphics package did the scaling and there was a little JPEG artifacting on the source image. But, to my eyes at least, the scaled image looks fine. Anyone got any insight?

I have a 1366x768 screen and use 720p content all the time... you'd never tell it was slightly upscaled.
Bear in mind the scaler in the set is designed for it.
