I don`t and I`ve owned both the sony and samsung for a duration of time (currently owning the bravia s series now) and I`m not just basing my opinion on a 30 second glance at a crappy freeview signal like others who have commented.
If your referring that statement to me, the first time was more than 30 seconds and i actually have now tinkered with it fully. Using a THX Optimizer and gone through all the settings. It is in no way as clear, sharp or as nice as the Samsung.. And to make things worse for the Sony, when i got home, i decided to use the "My Colour Control" scheme on the Samsung, and it is absolutly amazing. Even better than before. I can't believe that i have never seen that before! And its not even running through HDMI yet!

Opinions will differ. Eyes will see different things. And as was said, the "majority" believe it is not as good, me being one of them, obviously, you don't. This does not mean you are wrong or vice versa, but I do believe its not as good. Add to that the Australian release does not have a HDMI Input, it really is not a good buy, as that cuts off future HD content right there. Although keep in mind, that is the Australian release i'm judging on. With HDMI it may be different.

Oh and yeah you are right on one thing. The manual Backlight adjustment on the Sony is kickass. I hate the way the Brightness sensor on the Samsung works. Very annoying.

Bottom line. If your in Australia, ditch the Sony. With no HDMI input, it kills the TV, and really hold back what you can do with the picture. And from what I saw, its not as good. And i spent a good few hours with it.

Very true; just go compare and contrast the opinions of any two home cinema review magazines to see that. Regularly one will rave and the other go 'meh'.

          An update on the telly.

I've been messing around with the colours and settings, and I just seem so lost. There's so many settings, I'm sure someone who knew about these things could probably produce a stunning picture from these sets. At the moment, I'm only using the preset 'standard' settings, which give a decent effect, although it doesn't allow you to adjust backlight unless your using 'custom' colour settings. I haven't had a chance to try the VGA again, as I'm using my TFT for that. Still waiting for component cables to arrive for my Cube and PS2. I'm trying to get some pics, but I can't seem to get them right, especially as I don't have too many sources to use.

A question for anyone who knows. I'm going to buy another lead to hook up my PC to the screen using the DVI output on my 9800 pro and the VGA input on my screen. My question is, should I buy a DVI cable, plug it into the 9800 direct, and use a DVI to VGA adapter at the other end to plug into the screen, or should I go the opposite way (VGA lead, adapter at graphics card end)?

I think Im going to go for a 32" Panasonic 500 series LCD as a replacement for my Samsung LE32R51B.

Hopefully should be a good one!

The end result will be exactly the same, because both methods use an analogue (VGA/DVI-A) signal.
The latter will likely be cheaper.

Ok cool, thanks. That's another few quid spent on cables.

I'm not allowed a single thread for these questions and have been told to post them here. Sorry if these have already been discussed.

That blasted game setup thread has tipped me over the edge: I need one of those Samsung LCD TVs badly! The 26" model with built-in freeview is the one i'd like.

                  1. Empire Direct's buy now pay later offer seems very reasonable. Is there a catch? ?40 a month for 2 years is very affordable for me.

                  2. Is progressive scan easier on the eyes than interlaced?

                  3. Do the Samsung LCDs handle 480p well? I assume that they are more comfortable in 720p.

                  4. And SCART? Do SNES games look ok?

                  5. Should I wait for 5ms displays to come out or is 8ms perfectly ok? F-Zero GX would be a good test for this I guess..

                  6. Where will I put my centre speaker?

                  7. A few rogue Gamecube games don't support progressive scan. Can the TV force progressive scan?

                  8. Is it quite light or is it heavier than it looks?

Okay. I can't answer all the questions, but i will answer what i can. I have the Samsung LA26R51B and it is amazing!

                    2. Is progressive scan easier on the eyes than interlaced?
Yes very much so. It cleans up the image considerably. DVD's and games in PS look much better through it.

                    3. Do the Samsung LCDs handle 480p well? I assume that they are more comfortable in 720p
Yep. They look very good in 480p. Just try watching Nemo in 480p. Amazing. Can't wait for my HDMI cable and 720p! just the though is making my mind boggle! But yeah Very good in 480p.

                    4. And SCART? Do SNES games look ok?
Don't know about SNES games, but composite doesn't look to flash. I have my PS2 through composite, as well as my DC, and lets just say, that after i swapped my PS2 from Componet over, it looks very bland indeed! Not unplayable by any means, just not amazing either.

                    5. Should I wait for 5ms displays to come out or is 8ms perfectly ok? F-Zero GX would be a good test for this I guess..
No don't wait, unless you have to. Because 8ms displays are fine. F-Zero in 480p in AWESOME! No ghosting or nothing. Mute City is fab with all the vibrant colours. First game i tested actually!

                    8. Is it quite light or is it heavier than it looks?
Yeah it is. When i first lifted it i was VERY surprised as i was expecting it to be a lot lighter than it was. But its still not "heavy". 15kg net weight, the website says.

Hope some of those helps. It is an amazing tellie.

Stay away from JVC LCD tvs if you don't want **** like this to happen (see top of screen):

                      http://home.wanadoo.nl/~neuro/TV/DSC04871.JPG

                      http://home.wanadoo.nl/~neuro/TV/DSC04872.JPG

                      http://home.wanadoo.nl/~neuro/TV/DSC04873.JPG

It completely ****s up the top 2 inches of the screen when you connect certain kinds of resolutions through scart-RGB (for instance Ico on a ps2, ALL snes games in 60Hz, all Saturn games, etc ect).

JVC cannot find a solution they say and basically gave me the big finger...

Can't you demand a refund since the TV... doesn't work?

Thanks for the reassuring answers Cuber001 Sorry about those problems Schweino, it's frustrating when companies don't take responsibility for faults

I just thought of two more questions

                          9. Is it worth buying a PS2 component cable or should I just stick to scart?

                          10. Am I right in saying that not many PS2 games support 480p?

Im working on that with the shop who sold it to me. They are claiming the TV is meant for watching TV, not for playing games on it.....

I'm preparing a law suit as we speak.

By the way: the above problem is confirmed to happen on ALL LT-26C50 and LT-26S60 series TVs....

SCART looks ok, but any interlaced games look like they're "ghosting" a bit. (it's actually the de-interlacer, but that's beside the point)

If older systems are important to you, you'll want to buy an XRGB2+ - completely sorts things out.

See here for more details. (I think I might've made another topic on it too; should come up in a search)

No; most if not all displays below 8ms are using trickery that gets them a really low peak response time, but can actually be higher overall. 8ms displays are fine for gaming as they are.
