I forgot to mention... The LCD TV must have Freeview HD and also some kind of internet widget to watch BBC iPlayer and so on.

Budget no matter what, cannot go over ?550 and to be fair, I'd prefer her to have a 40" LCD TV than 37".

I was looking at the Samsung LE37C650 37" LCD TV at ?499.99

Please note, this will mainly be used for watching movies and playing a few games on the Xbox 360. Oh, I'd probably plug in my old PC in it as well for some MAME action!

Many thanks in advance to all replies.

The Samsung LE40C650 is a nice choice and they fixed one of my main criticisms of it (unavoidable film grain smoothing) with firmware fixes. It still has 40ms of input lag though :/

Samsung LE40C650 better than SONY BRAVIA KDL40EX503 you reckon?

I'd say it just about edges it, both have flaws.

Ended up getting the Samsung LE40C650 in the end.
I think it's absolutely fantastic for the ?499.99 price that I paid for it.

The Samsung apps is what makes it really stand out though - Youtube, facebook, twitter, iplayer and more make this TV really stand out from other TV's.

Hey Lyris, have you reviewed the P37X20B ? I've currently got the P37X10 and owned the 37PX70and 37PX80 too, all were bought as soon as they were released. Is it me or they're going down in pic quality ever so slightly, peaking with the PX80?

Also Im sure my current set has got duller in brightness as times progressed, would a professional calibration help things? If yes would it be worth the expense of arranging(I think its around £100 a pop with some engineers?) bearing in mind the sets are only worth around £350 these days?

                Cheers

Does anyone have the Samsung LE40C580 and has any comments on it? ?430 from Richer Sounds and I'm on the verge of getting it. Just want some more opinions on gaming with it regards lag.

Hey Bash - I've not reviewed any of the non-1080p Panasonics. I'd love to have a look at one.

Define "picture quality" - tricky one! Honestly, my experience with the Panasonic Plasmas is more recent than the PX80. I do know that there have been complaints of power consumption reductions having a slight effect on picture quality, but I haven't been able to clarify. With that said, the picture quality has probably gotten better since Panasonic started listening to requests to add things like THX Mode (for near-calibrated picture quality straight out of the box) and more in depth controls.

A calibration will improve colour neutrality, but it won't make the picture brighter. It does sound like it's aged - how old is it?

Rossco - I think the guy who reviewed that on HDTVtest (Neilo) later added that the input lag can be cut down even further if you go into the AV selection screen and label the input as "PC". I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Yeah I was reading through the comments of the review there and seen that. Ive ordered it from Richer Sounds now anyway and they'll have it in stock next week so I'll go get it then. Or make someone else go get it for me since I'm still in crutches hehe!

Cheers for the help Lyris. If I find it too slow I can always take it back, Richer Sounds are always good for that but as you said, you think my current TV might be slow already so an improvement in speed from a new TV could answer all those questions when playing CoD online where you were sure you killed that guy but he got you instead.

I'll be sure to post my impressions anyway as it seems a great set and would be hopefully be a useful purchase for anyone else here looking for a mid range good value TV.

I have one in the bedroom, it is OK, I had a Sasmung 650 before it and then a 7000 and never really got on with the 7000, the led backlighting actually made the image worse as it was much brighter on the edge, noticeable with darker scenes, so I sold it and bought the 580.

It is pretty good if you want LCD, and I do prefer the image over the 7000 but my 5 year old Panasonic plasma beats it in every single area, and you could buy one of those for £300 used.

I wouldn't want it as my main screen after living with Panasonic commercial plasmas for the last 7 years, but I use it for browsing my music using an AppleTV and for that it is great.

Yeh I don't want a plasma to be honest but I appreciate the opinions! I do only plan on keeping it if it is perfect for me so I'll be putting it under alot of scrutiny. I'm way better than average people with regards to visual fidelity standards obviously you seem a litre higher and Lyris obviously knows what he's talking about but as long as this TV is an improvement over my current 2 year old Bravia LCD then that's all I ask for.

I wish Richer Sounds would hurry up and get it in stock!

Call John Lewis and get them to match it.
I did, then you get 5 year warranty too.
