Don't say unfortunately. If 37" is indeed too big then i'll save myself a good 500 to 600 quid going with the 32" option.

I sit about 8ft away and I think that anything larger than my 32" screen would be uncomfortable. Stick with the 32".

After getting fed up of the space my old 32" CRT took up, I went for the sexy 32" Samsung jobbie for ?800, after fiddling with the settings it really is amazing looking- I'd say to anybody thinking about it to just go for it- you won't regret it I promise!

As for the tearing issue, most of the newer Samsung TV's are fine, mine has May firmware and I have played hours of 720p content with perfect results. What I would advise is for people to change their settings- especially if using an Xbox via component. Here's what I found to be best for viewing with all sources:

        Digital NR: On
        Dynamic Contrast: Off
        Brightness Sensor: On

        Contrast: 80
        Brightness: 50
        Sharpness: 0 (essential, IMO)
        Colour: 55
        Colour tone: Normal

        Hope this helps

I rang up and said I was having the problems, just so I could sort it out. I had noticed a bit of tearing even when playing halo 2 and burnout 4 at 480p.

New Philips seems to be the flat TV of the moment, bit pricey but sounds like it may be worth the extra cost - ?1600 is about the best I can find for the 32"

            http://www.consumer.philips.com/cons...CSHQNHKFSESI5P

37 & 42" versions seem to have 1920x1080p screen, so may be worth the stretch, but 1080p does not seem to be confirmed at the moment on either.

Think I'm going to wait until the 360 launches before making a decision, new screens seem to be coming thick and fast now.

edit : oh and its What Hifi Product of the year 2005 TV's !

Anyone wanna buy a Samsung 51 series 32"?

I'm going to upgrade to a 43 or 50 inch Pioneer

The 37/42 Philips sets do not support 1080p, only 1080i, and will take 1366x768 from a PC max. That's pretty much all the big manufacturers with their latest screens out now, so I wouldn't expect to see much else new for a while.

When Unlightly will sell his 43 inch / 50 inch Pioneer then I say February.

My parents have this screen, it is pretty striking. I'm slightly disappointed in the picture quality however, it doesn't seem to be as clear as I'd have liked. I haven't run any games off it in HD yet though, as I don't own the cables.

If anyone has any recommendations for improving the picture quality , which cables to get etc, then let me know and I'll pass on the info

Trouble with deciding on LCD TV there is always unexpected curveball waiting for you to confuse you more.

So this Phillip new TV will mean more choice from Samsung, Panasonic, Phillips, and JVC (and possibly Sony / Pioneer in the future)

I think the real problem is people buying HD panels when they have no intention of watching HD content, at least for quite some time.

SD will never look as good on a HD panel as it does on an SD one.

On a HD panel, the television has to "upscale" the SD image to fit the display, which basically means it has to create information out of nothing by using interpolation.

Here is what is displayed on a SD television:

As you can see, it's nice and sharp when displayed at its native resolution.

And here is how it will look on a HD television, as it has to be "upscaled"

                        (image taken from here)

As you can see, the picture is noticeably softer. However, with a HD signal, that large image will be pin-sharp, whereas it will have to be downsized to fit the older television, losing detail.

HD image on a HD panel:

HD image on a SD panel:

Notice how there is a loss of detail on the feathers.

Note: a television will not perform the scaling as well as either of these two examples, as it has to process 25/30/50/60 images per-second, so it will look a bit worse than this.

The difference is less noticeable here, as you'll be seeing it on a small monitor, but everything is magnified on a big display, so SD content will look worse, and HD content will look even better. (in my opinion HD doesn't really shine unless it's on a big display)

The other thing is that the SD television resolution was designed for screens 20" in size, nothing bigger.

I really can't understand why so many people buy HDTVs when they will not be watching HD for years. We're in a period of transition right now, and unless you're willing to pay the premium for HD content, then you should buy an EDTV like the Sharp P50 series. The picture looks fantastic with SD content, as it's running almost natively, but the set is still compatible with HD signals. (albeit at slightly lower resolutions)

I'm not meaning to single you out particularly, it's just getting to me now, as I'm hearing it so often on several boards. (AV forums has to be the worst; the same questions seem to get asked at least five times a day)

                        Comment

There is loads of HD content out now and sky HD first quater next year, there are also scalers that can improve SD content. Dvd's look better on HD screens (even without upscaling players) and certinally in the Panasonic range the HD screens have better scalers than the SD range and dont suffer from banding ala SD.

And with xbox 360 a month away why woud you not buy a HDTV at the moment ?

This period of transition will not be over until 2012 as the bandwidth is not avaliable for broadcast HD, unless your willing to wait 7 years with a CRT then whatever you do now will have chaged by then.

I'm so close to getting the Samsung Rome (LE32R41B), either that or the 26" version...can't really fit the 32" in my room, but I'm sure I could force it

My main worry is the audio side of things. I already own theseLogitech Z-5500, and would love to connect them up digitally. Not so fussed with general TV because I rarely watch that, but it would be essential for DVD and gaming. I assume I'd just connect them into each device digitally rather than into the TV itself?

I tried setting them up on the Philips linked above, see, and found I couldn't cos of lack of inputs! I'm a n00b though, evidently. Did manage to connect them via an optical cable to the DVD player eventually, mind.

Output the TV (stereo) to the hifi (stereo) and the DVD / consoles (surround) to the Logitech speakers (surround). Can you stick in an amp before those speakers?

You shouldn't need the hifi part really, but it's useful if you can't be arsed to set up the other speakers or you're watching Gladiator on TV.

Edit: Oh right, you can plug everything into the Logitech's at once without using an amp. Do that then.

Right, I got all my loan details through so I'm going to order the Sumsung 26" Rome now hopefully from dabs.com on the buy now pay in 9 months option.

But its a little unclear on there website:

I buy now, I pay a 10% charge, plus ?25 fee and then in 9 months, (July) I, pay the remaining 90% and thats it?

Thats what it should be, but when you go to the checkout it says:

"?61.99 deposit will be taken from above card
Balance of ?550.00 pain in 39 months"

Kinda confusing now, first of all it should be 9 months, not 39. So I dont know if that means I gotta pay it over 39 months + an enormous interest, which I'm not doing.

Only ordering it if I can basically pay the price of the TV plus that ?35 fee and nothing else.

Anyone want to clear this up before I order just incase..
