Was thinking that myself, the image from the Dreamcast is so much better than anything else I've seen. Makes you wonder what they're doing wrong with newer hardware...

It's mainly because the PC inputs on TVs don't get overscanned, sharpened and diddled around with, I think.

There are people who say that Component and HD15/VGA are the same in terms of quality, not true. "VGA" doesn't half the resolution of the colours so everything is literally pixel sharp and there's no colour bleed at all.

That is why the Panasonic commerical plasmas looks so nice, there is no processing going on, it doesn't soften the image!

I would buy a VGA switcher from Maplins for ?15 or so rather than a cheap DC vga box with pass through.

You can buy the 40X for that and in my opinion, theres actually alot of difference...

I found the VGA output from the 360 looked noticeably poorer on my 42" Tosh than through component. It looked quite low contrast and drab, and to be honest I didn't see any difference in sharpness. I have almost all of my TV's image processing stuff turned off.

My existing VGA box is a load of balls, are these actually decent?

The bits you're allowed to turn off, you mean?

Can't comment on the 360 though, because I don't have one! VGA done right should look better than Component though...

Hmm hooked up the Oppo to the Sony KDL-32S2030 today, seems you cannot force the AR to 4:3 if the input is a 1280x720 signal... so you gotta use the Wide/SQZ mode on the Oppo for 4:3 content, which is apparently inferior.

More of a flaw in the Oppo really, but strange the Sony cannot do this. Can't think of any other time I'd want to though.

The Wide/SQZ mode looks fine to my eyes mind.

I wanted to know this too. PC, DC and 360 all hooked up to VGA. Luckily it's relatively easy to reach the socket, but annoying nonetheless.

Yeah, that's always been a [mis]feature on the Sony screens, you're locked into 16:9 for any HD signals. 16:9 is the standard screen format for HDTV but I agree it should be an option on both the TV and the device.

Does the Oppo player not correctly show 4:3 video?

By default it stretches it ti 16:9, it relies on your TV to set correct AR. A limitation of the hardware apparently.

They added in a recent firmware a 'Wide/SQZ' mode where the Oppo will set correct AR, but I think it's done by the Mediatek chip as opposed to the Faroudja, the latter being superior.

It's not as bad as it sounds, it looks fine to me, it's just a less than ideal situation.

Shakey how does the set handle 360 VGA?

I'm having to take this muther****ing toshiba back after having it for only an hour

Handles it fine, but it *cannot* do 1280x720 over VGA. It does do 1360x768 though, so if you can live with using the 360 internal scaler...

I've tweaked it to get a really nice image from the 360 over Component, though having to live wth the overscan most screens suffer from with the 360 Component. Again, not as bad as it sounds.

When you use 1280*768 does it scale the image to fit?
