Well, I decided instead of buying a new game, I would give this downgrader a whirl so I could get my emulators back. I had upgraded to 2.6 a while back.

There was a great video podcast thing from psp hacking 101 and it all looked good to me and the steps were very clear. I did realise from pspupdates that the success rate was just over 90%. That's a 1 in 10 chance of a brick but I was willing to take that chance as I have a second PSP.

So I followed the directions and, sure enough, it worked exactly like the instructions said it would. First thing I loaded up was Micro Machines '96. I still have the old j-cart of this and, along with the ecco games, it's one game I would run into a burning building to save. Really nice.

I'm looking forward to getting that modchip so I can run everything without worrying about firmware but, if you're not getting the chip and are willing to take the risks involved in downgrading (bearing in mind that a certain percentage of those with bricked PSPs may not have followed instructions carefully), I'd recommend this downgrader.

I've tried this downgrader and works brilliantly. GTA loader homebrew is now a thing of the past. BUT my cousin tried to do the same thing and it bricked his 2.5 original (i had an original 2.01) PSP. problems. Will Sony replace?

I say its up to you if you want to take the risk (although the benefits are amazing)

I guess your cousin didn't check their motherboard first to see if was compatible. TA-082 motherboards can't run the downdater - trying to run it will create a brick on these systems. How to spot whether you have the newer type of psp seems fairly easy - theres even an app that you can run which will tell you as well.

Well there are other ways it can result in an improper flash so it may not have just been a TA-082 board (which, to be honest, seem quite rare).

Im quite new to the psp.
How easy is it for me to downgrade from 2.6 to 1.5 then download a few SNES emulators (mainly after super metroid) and play with my PSP? It's not a TA-082 board.
Is there anything in peticular I need?

if you are only wanting a snes emulator stay on 2.6 and use the gta eboot launcher.

                Even more custom firmwares!

Most interesting is the firmware that allows you to auto-boot Devhook by holding a button, so you can essentially boot 2.71 firmware from the get-go.

I'm not gonna flash until a true firmware comes out supporting 2.71 games w/ homebrew (it's not like it takes much effort to boot Devhook manually), but it's still excellent stuff.

Is there a way of doing it without having GTA?

Not to my knowledge. The GTA exploit is the key to accessing whatever needs to be accessed. As they have now updated GTA, you would need to track down an older copy.

New Devhook supports Homebrew loading from WITHIN emulated 2.71!

This means you can install that custom firmware that supports loading of Devhook on startup and load 2.71 games AND homebrew from the get-go!

EDIT - Reading the comments, it seems homebrew must be 'altered' somehow to work from within 2.71. Have to look more into this later.

Don't think we'll be seeing any more Devhook updates

With all the success of Devhook, I guess it was getting too uncomfortable for Sony on their comfy chairs. It seems that pspsoftware.ddo.jp, the actual release site of Devhook has received a Cease and Desist Order from Sony with regards to distributing Devhook.

Oh I wouldn't count on that. Devhook has Sony's panties in a bunch, no doubt. There is one file distributed with Devhook that gives them the only legal ground to issue any cease and disist order. Devhook itself does not contain that reboot file. I'd say the only thing that will change is that the file in particular will be up to the individual to get - just like the firmware files that are needed to install the firmware emulation.

Of course Sony could threaten legal action for circumventing their protection methods. And in the US they'd have a chance of winning. I'd imagine in large portions of the rest of the world they'd be told to go and ****e.

The source code was released a few versions back, so there'll should be plenty of updates hitting the net in the future.

It looks like the site got the order because one of the uploads contained a reboot.bin file which is of course copyright protected. Be interesting to see what happens from now on; there are sites out there that carry all the unencrypted firmware files so I think they might be the next targets for Sony.

Another step forward on homebrew front, downgradable 2.8 firmware and no GTA required

                                Admit defeat Sony
