Do we know if Pal Wii games will be 60hz etc yet? How about the Downloadable games, will they be the shoddy Pal versions?
Will the Pal Wii games all support Component 480p etc etc?
Basically i haven't been keeping up on the Wii front AT ALL, what's the consensus... import or Pal??

US Wii will NOT support RGB output!

I can almost guarantee that the US Wii won't support RGB.

Ever since the N64, Nintendo has gone through a lot of trouble to ensure that as few Europeans as possible import US systems of their hardware. That's the only reason they left out the RGB-output of the multi-out on the N64 - even though the multi-out is identical with the one on Snes. As you probably know you could mod the first release of the USA N64 units to output RGB. When Nintendo discovered this, they redisgned the motherboard of the N64 to make this impossible. That's why the first batch of US N64 units are worth so much more.

When the USA GameCube was released, it didn't have RGB output either even though the multi-out still was identical with the Snes multi-out. When the GameCube was released in Europe Nintendo removed the S-video output and put in RGB-output instead. However, someone discovered that you could reconfigure the video-chip in the component cable for the GameCube to make it output RGB instead of component signals. Thus, once again Nintendo had failed to prevent Europeans from playing their US consoles.

I'm sure that with the Wii they don't intend to make the same mistake again. I'm ready to bet a lot of money that's why the design of the multi-out is a different one for the first time since the Snes days - if they used the GameCube outputs everyone would already have an RGB solution for the Wii!

To sum it up - US Wii will feature S-video and Component output while the PAL Wii will feature RGB and component output. Anyone want to bet?

On the positive side - if Nintendo indeed is using the same video chip built into the Wii unit as they used in their component cables for GameCube, you should be able to modify it to output RGB, just like with the GameCube component cable. However, I doubt Nintendo would do such a blunder after all their trouble of excluding RGB from their US systems.....

I don't think that part is true. When you look at the GameCube, the Component output support was very much "bolted on" - the raw video data from the graphics chip got literally sent out a proprietary hole in the back and had to be further processed by the video encoder chip in the cable before going to the TV.

Now the video encoder chip is in the console. Correct me if I'm wrong but that means that the AV Multi Out needed to be redesigned, probably to accomodate extra functions such as Y,Pb,Pr out, and most importantly, Progressive Scan enable/disable.

As you say, if they've disabled RGB people will need to open up their Wiis and mod the console rather than a video cable. If that's the case, then the bottom-right pin of the chip - that's the one you lifted/disabled to make a Cube Component cable into a Cube RGB one - can easily have a switch attached to it to enable/disable RGB mode.

As for making sure the video chip can't do RGB at all - for Nintendo to have whoever makes the chip redesign it just for them would probably cost extra, and this is a machine designed to be cheap. And that's if it's a different revision of the said chip anyway - it could be the EXACT same version that was in the Cube. I'm quite sure Nintendo will, especially in the face of shortages, want to be able to lift parts from anywhere and go straight to manufacturing. In my opinion, redesigning the chip to spite a few Europeans and Australasians just wouldn't be worth their while.

Owners of US Wii consoles wanting to play over RGB SCART will be able to, I guarantee it. If not on launch then shortly after...

I didn't have any trouble hooking my PAL Wii wirelessly to a Netgear DG834G. It found the network with no problem and then it was just a case of entering a passcode.

Since this was confirmed to work, where would we be able to get a UK power supply?

No you can't. US Wii points are freely available on ebay. They can email you the code so you don't need to pay shipping.

Anyone tried an RGB cable on their US Wii yet? Any more news from Saurian?

Will I be able to use the step-down converter I used on my Gamecube? That was a JPN console and modded to play US games.

                        The converter is

                        100 Watt Electricity Converter
                        Model TF-200W
                        Input 220/240V AC
                        Output 110/120V AC
                        50/60Hz

Know sod all about converters, just looking to save a little bit of money :P
