That £1 charge I think is usually a pre-authorisation thing to confirm the details (Presumably while setting up the account). Perhaps your bank have flagged it?

I just refuse to shop with them now after they ballsed up my GTA4 preorder despite being one of the first to preorder. Then stopped people on their site talking about it, and also removed any posting priviledges.

Then to have some italian sounding guy shouting down the phone at me resulting in me cancelling my account.

I wouldnt have minded him shouting but for once i was quite calm and in the end its money they've lost and someone else has gained

I tried to order the Orange Box from shopto and my experience was overwhelmingly negative. There were pages and pages of forms to fill in just to set up an account and any time a mistake was made it redirected me right back to the start and everything had to typed out again as it didn't save any fields. Trying to enter credit cards details was an absolute nightmare and I am well accustomed to online shopping. After about an hour of simply trying to order a single game I gave up, life's too short for this overcomplicated and terribly designed website. I would touch them with a barge pole.

Furthermore, "shopto" isn't even a real word, I looked it up.

Strange, I've not used them for seemingly ages but I've just received this email:

Security reasons? Are their systems not safe to leave card details on?

They just seem to be getting stranger & stranger there, I had no intention of using them again after the previous mess they'd made with my orders. That combined with the numerous threads online it does seem fairly common.

It's a shame as they pretty much used to be the only UK shop I'd use but when they get something wrong they seem to really get it wrong. I really couldn't believe the problems that some people had been having with them until I had them myself.

Had the same mail. There was a big fuss over them possibly being compromised fairly recently, so perhaps this is as a result of that. Wish more people would do it actually, don't see why they need to retain the information at all, I can enter it each time I need to.

I kinda agree...Amazon and Microsoft (LIVE) are the worst offenders, once the details are on those, forget about removing them!

ITs from feedback aload of us have asked em to do on the forums as everyone panicks about details being left on the accounts when you order from somwhere. Now they have altered it so if its not used for a month your card will just need putting in again when you order (asked about this and its not affecting say one of my preorders as if you have something preordered it stays for it). They have also altered the card system and now we have to put security questions etc.. in and it doesnt show digits of cards.

I dont blame em for doing it. Their was alot of bollox about em being targeted for fraud (I even cancelled my bloody card over it two weeks ago) only to find out it was a load of crap from a old google mistranslation back in March where a shed load of different sites got hit at same time and 19k of cards compromised. The hack came from vietnam of all places when it was tracked from reading about it and it originated from Australia where people first got hit buying clothes online. Basically a load of hotair over nothing targeted at Shopto and for me a waste of 4days not being able to use any money till I got a new card sorted. Definetly last time I read a german site thru babblefish pml (yes it annoyed me as it stopped me getting Demons souls on import with a card earlier).

I think its a good move as I dont want my details being left on any system for ages as Im hyper sensative to any worry on mail order. Thats how I got hit by a USA site as I couldnt get my card details off it and that site got hit. Im suprised Shopto are still one of the few sites what use the 3dsecure for passwords when I place an order instock even PA I was using it a few years ago and its quicker to get my stuff sent.

I think they could have worded the email abit better though lol

Ive had to try and get rid of my last card over last week. Right pain to get rid of em on few sites they really dont make it easy (as my bank wanted me to get rid everywhere I use again).

If only all online retailers did this! Shopto (who have been good to me so far FWIW) are to be commended, having to type in my card details is a minor inconvenience.

Internet shopping would feel a lot safer if this became a norm, I would take it a step further and wish for all personal details (name, address etc.) to be purged from retailer databases too after say a year of inactivity. I shudder to think how many places must have my bank details and address on file despite me only placing a one off order.
