    Right, few questions:

    1. I'm looking for a decent sized memory stick to turn into a magic memory stick - is this one from play going to work fine for the purpose or should I go with a proper pro duo? http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/4...tml?P36=82MB8L

    2. I've ordered myself a Datel service battery for Pandora related purposes - do I need to fiddle with it at all, or is it Pandora-esque out of the box?

    3. Once I have the magic stick and pandora battery both together, how then do I downgrade my slim and get all my homebrew loveliness onto it?

I should point out I'm no stranger to the custom firmware scene, having successfully downgraded my original PSP which I've just sold on.

    Cheers

I'd really appreciate some advice if anyone knows, especially on the subject of the memory stick.

I know it fits into the PSP through an adapter, but would that hinder the process of creating the magic stick at all?

        1. I don't see why you'd have any problems with the mini memory stick, you get an adapter with it which makes it the same as the full size version. I've not used one for this but I've used them for other things without any problems at all.
        2. It will arrive as a Pandora's battery so you won't need to do anything.
        3. Read here, here & here for details. It's been so long that I've done anything like this that I'm not really the person to ask for details.
Hopefully that'll help you out and if you do have any questions about specific parts of the conversion I'm sure if you post them here then either me or somebody who knows what the hell they are talking about will be able to rely.

Right, think I'm ok for now. One more question, does the Pandora battery need to be used at all times or do I just use it the once every time I update the firmware?

Found out Datel do a cheaper Pandora battery called Hot Wire, which while doesn't charge via the PSP but AAA batteries, it doesn't require fiddling about with additional software in order to change your PSP battery to and from.

You just use it the once, then you use your normal battery

Just got my Datel HotWire battery from Gameseek, stuck the batteries into it and slotted it into the PSP, but how do I know it's in service mode?

Will service mode only appear once I have the magic memory stick inserted? It just has the standard 4GB stick in atm. So far all I get is the flashing power LED and nothing on screen.

Edit: I suppose it would make sense that's nothing appearing as the battery just boots the PSP from the stick which is currently empty, the service mode data isn't actually stored on the battery is it?

I used the Datel service tool which converts the battery to service mode then back so i presume works the same way as yours.

Make sure the psp is fully switched off insert magic memory stick then the battery and the psp will turn on itself and should boot to the custom install menu.

Will it boot to the custom menu without the magic stick tho, that's my problem. As I say, all I'm getting atm is a blinking green LED when I insert the hot wire - the memory stick is inserted but it's currently empty, so I've yet to flash it.

How does the battery allow you to boot into service mode?

Edit: Hot Wire works differently, basically you stick in 3 AAA batteries and it boots without having to switch your original battery, so I went with that to avoid risking damage.

AFAIK it needs the magic memory stick.Do you have the software to make your magic memory stick ?

I do yeah, I'm using this guide on here:

                        Looks straightforward enough

                          WOOT! Sorted!

And to think all it took was to think to myself "Hmm, maybe this blinking green light is an indication that the batteries in the Hotwire are low"

Sure enough I was right - the batteries supplied with the HotWire were near enough completely out of juice and were stopping it from functioning, which although a very good safety measure, supplying near enough dead batteries REALLY is just asking for trouble

Rule of thumb - anything that comes with free, unrechargable batteries, just chuck them straight in the bin and get some fresh ones

Thought I'd give this thread another bump, as basically I'm looking for a few recommendations as to what I should stick onto the PSP now that it's downgraded. Currently I have SCUMMVM for PC graphic adventures and PicoDrive Genesis emulator (the latter hasn't really seen much use apart from the 2nd and 3rd Streets of Rage games).

I'm really after a SNES emulator or something like that (basically I got the genesis one hoping that 2 games I was after in particular, namely Shadowrun and Batman Returns would be the classics I remember from years back, but it turned out that the Genesis only managed comparatively inferior versions) but I've been reliably informed that SNES emulators are flawed at best.

Any and all recommendations greatly received - please include a basic instruction for their use if one is not included

Capcom CPS1, CPS2, neogeo. With neogeo on the slim you still need to create ROM cache files. NesterJ is good too. all installs are self explanatory, make a roms/ folder inside and you're good to go.

edit: SNES emulation is overall pretty poor, massive speed issues.
