Thought I'd drag this thread up instead of starting a new one...

After a pair of wireless Dolby 5.1 headphones. Any recommendations please?

Quite like the look of the Sony MDR-DS3000K's but wondered if there was anything else similar? Or indeed if they're any good?

Oh and I probably have similar requirements to everyone else - would like to use them for late night gaming and movie watching (which counts as after 7pm in this house apparently). Cheers.

Wasn't sure whether to start a new thread for this or not.

Just wondering does anybody prefer using headphones to a proper surround sound set-up?

I don't mean because of circumstances (playing at night etc) - I mean out of sheer preference? I've got a fairly basic surround system (Sony HTSF1000) which is great but sometimes I just prefer the... intimacy... of headphones, that complete immersion of sound field you get.

For online games where spatial awareness is everything (COD4) you can't beat the locked in feeling. For other games I prefer the openness of a real surround experience.

I've got the Sharkoons too and I've gotta say that I'm not really impressed with them.

They just sound really tinny, the surround sound effect didn't really differ that much from stereo and they feel really heavy and uncomfortable after a while. Also, I dunno if it is just my set but i can hear faint background blips and beeps when I use them with my 360.

That's interesting - I find that having surround sound on COD4 is a real help because I can hear when people are approaching from behind ( I use the "Dead Silence" perk myself )

I think a game that doesn't rely so much on surround side ( perhaps a driving game or Pro Evo etc? ) headphones can definitely immerse you more. It's subjective really, there's just times when I think "Would I be better whacking my headphones on?"

I quite liked playing with headphones on, but my hitler lover didn't like it as I couldn't hear her talk to me, it was also tricky if I wanted to play a game with the headset

A pair of Zalman 5.1 headphones goes for about ?25 in retailers so they are quite cheap, got a pair but frankly dont use them that much. You do get the surround experience, but I feel sick with my ears sucked into a cup with little ventilation - speakers are great, but I've lived either in halls or with other people with paper thin walls and I cant really use the speakers when they are around.

I use 5.1 surround headphones, not stereo one so still get the full experience.

Ah, sensible! I do have a 5.1 receiver for headphones - it's just a bit fiddly to unplug the optical from my 360 / PS3 into the receiver every time I want to use it so when I do use my headphones I tend to just plug it into the TV ( frustratingly my surround sound receiver doesn't have a headphone socket - I will definitely make sure my next one does though! )

I haven't played played a game without headphones for years. After buying a set with a true Dolby Headphone decoder I gave up on the whole idea of surround sound. I just didn't like the just slightly outside my head audio field. It just didn't sound as natural as ordinary, inside your head stereo even though it could mimic rear speakers effectively enough.
