Does it crash with any specific game, or just on the desktop? Download RivaTuner and see what it's Core/Shader/Memory speeds are at, for a GTX it should be like 575-600, 1400ish and 900-100MHz see if they are around that, driver restart can be caused by overclocking too much, so double check those. It's also got a temp monitor on it.

Are you doing a clean install? Uninstall the drivers, boot into safe mode, run Driver Cleaner (think it's called that), reboot and install the new drivers.

I had the same sort of problems when I upgraded to an 8600.
Solved thus - uninstall the drivers in windows add/remove programs do the same thing for NTune if you have it.
Find the Nvidia folders and delete them.
Reboot let the system start up and detect the card, ignore its requests to download drivers etc.
Run the latest Nvidia drivers pack for the card - which is http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/winxp_163.71_uk.html (thats the xp one)

If it doesnt work - beat it!

As amusing as I find that, you should only really post if you can answer his question to be honest.

dvdmike - I had simular problems with my X1950 Pro, where all it would do at the start was blue screen and not boot up into windows at ALL.

All I needed to do was refit the card and change the power rails around.

Have you actually physically taken the card out and refitted it?

Well my X1950 does and the 8800gtx is leagues ahead AFAIK.

                    It should do!

Yes as a matter of fact it does, well I will be a MS fanboy tut, should not have installed vista after all we all know about MS and working products.
At least I got to play Portal for 20 mins at 1900x1200 thats enought to make a 720p port cry home to mummy.
And its a ds game I use that to fap over jailbait, so I guess we now know what Yoshi uses his PC for

Fixed it !! for anyone else who has the problem
I have found and fixed the problem today. This is what appears to happen.
during the installation of the most current drivers 100.65 Vista, an OLD file
nvlddmkm.sys is copied into windows/system32/drivers and not the current one
in the install. As a result the new drivers are attempting to access a file
dated 11/2006 instead of 2/2007 ver 7.15.11.0065 which is in the newest WHQL
                              driver ver 100.65 vista 32.
Fix: Go to windows/system32/drivers and rename nvlddmkm.sys to
nvlddmkm.sys.old. Go to the nvidia directory and find the file nvlddmkm.sy_
and copy it to windows/system32. Using the cmd window (DOS box) type
EXPAND.EXE nvlddmkm.sy_ nvlddmkm.sys. When the expansion is complete, copy
the new nvlddmkm.sys to windows/system32/drivers and restart the computer.
Your computer should now work properly.
You will notice that any uninstall and reinstall of nvidia drivers will not
remove the old nvlddmkm.sys file and will not overwrite it with the newer
version. You have to do it manually. I do not know why this happens but who
cares as long it is fixed.
