That is a valid point after the pain that was Vista. But..... Having been on the beta for 7 since the start and now on the RC on a netbook and my HTPC I have no problem shelling out for the dosh for it as its just done what its ment too, not one crash!
Extender support is much better, in xp mce the cpu and mem levels used to top out all the time. My only gripe is the dvd library not being usable at present on the extender (I`m sure it part worked in the first beta)
MS have never got anything so spot on (maybe the 7 team could take a look at my 360 lol)

I haven't used 7 so don't have direct experience of it, I also left Vista totally alone and stuck with XP.

I'm sure MS have learnt from Vista but the way we all use PC's now is so varied, with so many apps, usb equipment etc that I find it hard to imagine any OS can launch 'complete'.

I'd like to see the launch and sit back for a bit before diving in, I've got a new pc coming with an upgrade key for Windows 7 but will hold back on using it for a good 6 months.

You shouldn't need to hold back at all providing there are drivers available for your devices (and I imagine there probably are). Performance and compatibility are fantastic, as they've been focused on those two points quite heavily. Pretty great O/S, which you'll find out for yourself when you try it.

Just noticed the home basic version doesnt have mce in it.
I`m gonna go for the cheap as chips version for my netbook, and the pro version for my mce machine.
The version on sale is Home premium, not basic. It comes with MCE. You won't be able to buy home basic

Me too. I noticed Amazon wacked up the price pretty sharp-ish. I ordered mine yesterday from Dixons (yuck!) but it was still 44.95 for the Home Premium, if anyone is still looking.

Sounds like these places have fixed shipment numbers and they underestimated how much it'd sell. Hopefully they won't jack up the price to people who've already pre-ordered.

Looks like MS could have some impressive pre-order figures on their hands (probably their intent with this pretty heavy price reduction)

I whacked in my pre-order with Dixons too, Home Premium, don't really need the extras in the Pro version.

Just a quick question though, are 64 bit and 32 bit versions all on the one disk now? I need the 64 bit version as I've got 4GB ram in my laptop.

Comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs. Taken from the Windows blog:

How do I get a 64-bit copy of Windows 7?

The Upgrade and Full packaged retail product of Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate will come with both 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs. With Windows Vista, the 64-bit version was only available with Windows Vista Ultimate. Due to the incredible adoption of 64-bit today and customer feedback, we decided to change this for Windows 7. Now all copies of Windows 7 in developed markets will ship with both 32-bit and 64-bit DVDs.

Even at the more expensive price it's still cheaper than I was expecting. Is my memory playing tricks or was Vista a lot more expensive when it first launched?

Cheers Hohum and Smurfy. Good decision on Microsoft's part, hopefully it won't be long before 64 bit becomes the default option.
