I've never bought a Windows OS before except for with a new PC/laptop. If I was to have a new PC built for me when Windows 7 is released, would I be able to install W7 on the new hardware without a pre-existing operating system?
As you can probably tell, I know very little about these things :P

^Yeah, that's generally the prefered way of doing it, in fact. Upgrading, or installing on top of another OS, is never really a good idea. You woudl just have the DVD boot on startup and follow the install instructions. If you're doing it yourself, you may have to find drivers for some of your hardware and install them post-intallation (if Windows Update doesn't find them itself).
