Player is making a bit of a squeeling noise that I'm finding very annoying, but my AV stuff lives about 30cm away from where I sit. I may have to put it on a higher shelf. If I can get it working.

A friend had that and returned it for one that doesn't squeal. I'd imagine the build quality will be a bit hit and miss at this price point. Mine doesn't squeal - I sleep in the same room with it plugged in and once had a cheap second DVD player (also Toshiba) that I had to unplug at night for this reason.

I've exchanged it. It's squeeling a bit, but not too bad and none of the "scratch" noise when playing a disc. I've re-arranged my AV setup so it's another shelf up. I'll "run it in" for a few days and then decide whether to exchange it again, or keep it (and do the firmware hack).

After being through 3 of these, I've given up. Just picked up a Panasonic something 110, which I understand can be firmware modded to any region BRs. Will give it a try later.
