Problems with broadband and formating PC

Hi. i recently got Tiscali broadband 3x faster connection and since i got it the interenet has been slower than dial up.

i have contacted tiscali and they have said it is because of my internet explorer version, so i downloaded the newest one, still no improvement.

i asked around and people said it might be because of Windows XP. i have a Pentium 3, 450mhz PC. They said that XP cant run well on Pentium 1,2 or 3. So i want to format it now and when i try it says:

"Format cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force dismount on this volume? <Y/N>"

i press YES and it says:

"Cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use"

    Please help with this.

    Thanks!

Do you have a Windows XP disk? Goto the bios (tap delete as your pc boots) and change the boot sequence to be CD Rom first , then hard drive. Save changes and exit, put the disk in and reboot. Setup will start and you will be able to delete and reformat partitions and reinstall XP. Remember to back up EVERYTHING you need as it will be lost if you dont.

If you dont have an XP disk, then let us know.

One thing, I could run XP on my P3 450 with 512 SDRam. It wsnt the fastest in the world, but it worked nontheless. Them asking you to format suggests they just dont know what the real problem is, you may not need to do that at all.

Hehe 64 is far too low, I missed that, new ram sticks are cheap as chips now, Id suggest you buy at least 512Mb. The difference will be very apparrent, XP loves its memory.

what if i use a Millenium boot disc and try and format it? a mate sent me the millenium discs etc, and told me to install millenium instead of XP as it would improve the speed

also what about the broadband speed, why do you think that is so slow? even when i try and connect using dial-up thats faster!

How exactly are you trying to format the disk? Sounds like you're trying to do it from within windows or something, which would obviously be insane.

Just get Win2000 and format it as part of the initial installation.

Under no circumstances should anyone ever use WinME.

Have you got the latest drivers for it? Broadband isnt that configurable, it normally works or it doesnt, perhaps there is an issue with your line quality itself. Id remove/reinstall drivers first and take it from there. ME may runa bit faster than XP generally due to less system resources being used, I doubt that your real issue (ie lack of physical ram) will be improved a great deal though.

You should never try formatting windows from within windows - it won't happen. You should always format as part of the installation process. When you first boot the PC with your OS disc in, it will ask if you want to format the drive before it proceeds with the install. THAT is when you say "Yes" and flatten whatever is on there already.

Windows ME is an abomination. If you really must use a crummy old 16-Bit version of Windoze, use 98SE.

You wouldn't iron a shirt you're wearing, so don't format an OS install whilst actually on it.

                      What Chad said tbh.

so what do you think i should do:

                        1- buy more RAM
2- format, and install ME (i have no alternative OS)

Also, re:broadband, i have installed latest drivers and the technician has checked the line and its perfectly fine.

is it possible to use ME boot disc to format XP?

So once youve formatted XP, what OS are you going to install as it seems to me you dont have an OS disk at all?

                              1- buy more RAM
That will help with XP, but there is no rational reason that this could possibly improve download speeds. Tiscali may be fobbing you off.

2- format, and install ME (i have no alternative OS)
You should really try to find someone who has a 98SE disc that they don't use any more. ME has more bugs than Kofi Anan's office and it's terribly resource consuming for the turd that it is.
