Fight! Doom 64 vs PSone Doom

Just discussing with Marcus about how the original Doom on the Playstation was far, far superior to the N64 incarnation.

OK, the N64 carnation looked better, the redrawn sprites were fantastic, but what really, really spoilt it for me was the controls. With strafe on L and R, yet movement on the analog stick, you couldn't strafe left without moving your hand to the other prong! You could use the strafe-toggle button, but that meant it was impossible to circle enemies.

Also, the music of the PSone game was the best. Get to "The Crusher" on Doom II, and you'd hear babies crying in the background, and all kinds of scary stuff. Truly atmospheric **** right there, dawg!

And the PC version doesn't come into it at all, who can be scared whilst there's funky MIDI ditties playing in the background? :\

Shut it, PC version clearly the best.

...why? It's antiquated, the textures were pretty much redone for the PSone version, and it had all the sounds that the PC one *should* have had. Not to mention the new effects, a controller that was invented just for playing Doom, and the fact you got Doom, Doom2 and Ultimate Doom all in one package.

But the Saturn version was just the PSone version, but with a frame rate divided by half..

PC because it was smoother , o and also because it was released alot earlier than the Psone version, only thing the Psone version was good for was deathmatch.

I enjoyed D64 but the controls were a bit arse.

Also the PC version was better because of the quality sound packs, i perticually liked the one where the imp's said in a posh voice "Were very bad mothers"

Once you got used to the controls Doom64 was for me the best version of the lot. Where it lacks in control, it more than makes up for with superb level design, increased enemies with invisible varients, fantastic secret levels (the one with the teleporting Cyberdemon was just awesome), smooth solid 3D graphics and impressive visuals all round. One thing where the PS1 Doom bettered it at was the link-up, but even then Id argue that it was only the opening level which was really much cop for linkup play, the rest were either too large or too complex for two players to have any decent matches on.

Jaguar version with it's network hook up is the best of the console versions.

one of the win32 opengl Doom ports would be the best version to play right now though.

Admittedly, the Jag version is very good (and blew my sox off at the time compared with my shabby 32x version): shame about the Jag joypad...

I like N64 Doom immensely: I think the joypad suits it very nicely, thank you very much.

Which is worse, tho: PC or N64 Daikatana?

That's a tough one to call.

PC Daikatana was terrible (Someone bought me a boxed copy of it last year for Christmas, with a 50p price label on it >_< ) but the N64 version was...different. I'm not sure if the batty raping frogs were still in it, because I didn't get that far through the awful sludgy resolution. I got battered by a gun emplacement, turned it off, never turned it on again.

I've never played the N64 version but, imho, usable L&R strafe > strafe button.

My first experience with Doom was with the PS version. Months later, I bought the PC version and was inmediately horrified by the laughable music, which ruins all the atmosphere found in spades in the PS version.

Yes!!! Someone who agrees with me! \o/ I was in the same situation, I'd never had a PC. So I got the Playstation to see what the fuss was about, and I was amazed. I'd heard PC fanboys call the PC one better, so I got a copy a few years later, and was also horrified to see this disgrace on screen :|
