the music was decent if you had a decent sound card, and the graphics were better (higher res, higher frame rate) if you had a decent cpu/gfx card.

with the right setup there is no contest between the two, the PC version is definitely superior.

Add-in the transparencies of the PSone version, better controls, superior lighting, and I'm sorry but the sounds of the PSone version (Being CD-based and all, didn't the PC Doom have a footprint of about 30 meg?) were far, far more atmospheric. Frame rate's a given really, although I didn't try the game out on the "spec of the time" i.e. a 486.

tbh, lol @ comparing a 486 game to something revamped for the PSone. Actually, for those with an AWE32 or Gravis Ultrasound, I suspect you'll find PC players had superior sound capabilities, but lacked the CD storage for cdda or digitally encoded music. PC version came on ~3 or 4 hd floppies.

I think I saw level design mentioned in this discussion somewhere... were the levels not the same across all platforms?

As mentioned though, these days it's all about jDoom or similar.

Some levels on PSOne Doom chugged like a train. I actually went from PS Doom to PC Doom and thought PC was miles better, keyboard and mouse control notwithstanding. The lighting in PS Doom was totally OTT, gaudy primary colours were used far too often.

As for the sound, well NO GAME has managed to replicate the almighty WHOOOMPH of the super shotgun on the PC. The PS version sounded like someone hitting a golf ball.

Doom 64 was a horrendous experiment, much like the "plot" in the game itself.

GBA Doom is pretty marvellous, to be honest. Otherwise PC Doom, just for the mouse controls.

How can a version of Doom that can't be played online ever claim to be the best version? The PC wins version hands down. Plus it's silky smooth on a half decent PC and the run command is much faster than the console versions (try it and see).

The nice thing about the PS version was that it was easy to set up a co-op match. The Jag version had this too, but finding Jag owners is a tad more difficult.

The N64 version is a great game, but it's not very 'Doom-like' imo. I might be wrong, but I thought you couls map the strafe controls to the C buttons like Goldeneye?

Nope, hence my massive gripes with the game.

I had Doom 64. It was absolutely crap. Never played the PS1 version. PC version was pretty good.

Got to agree with that. For all the good work the sound on the PS version did in ramping up the atmosphere, the coloured lighting spoiled the effect by being overdone - it was really obvious and never blended in particularly well. Difficlt to shake the feeling that the only reason they included it was because they could, not because they thought it'd add anything of worth to the experience.

Yes you can, just did it. You can map anything to whatever you like...

Personally I have "strafe left" on trigger and "strafe right" on right shoulder.

The Jag wees on the 3DO. A big pint of smelly, sulphurous wee.

Bingo, I thought you could. Yet again, a Tom Salter argument is blown out of the water. Kabooooom!
