I was in Japan the other week and got an ASCII Gamecube Controller.

An entirely pointless purchase, since I don't think it even works with PAL PSO, but for 924 Yen (around ?8) I couldn't resist novelty value.

Also picked up a few Japanese Gamecube titles, such as Donkey Konga 3, Dreammix TV World Fighters and Mr Driller Drill Land.

Those keyboards work with pal pso, and with any other game as a standard controller. I used to use it for multi player as I didn't have 4 pads.

Oh cool, that's given it some use then. How odd that Sonic Team allowed compatibility for an accessory that wasn't even released in that region, although I guess it was probably just that they didn't think there was much point removing it after translating the JP version. In case it's not obvious, idk how localisation works...

It would have been a lot more work to actually remove support. Besides, it probably just detects it as a regular gamepad and keyboard.
