Is that definitely true? I thought the Asian PAL units have the same compatibility as a standard PAL MD - ie: they'll play all PAL games and non-region-locked Genesis/JP games, but not the later region-locked NTSC carts.

And can't the Asian/JP confusion be solved by seeing whether they output 50 or 60Hz? Or are there also 60Hz Asian units?

Well I can't be sure for everygame, but it does play JAP Virtua Racing for example, which has protection.

Kubrick's Mega Drive and mine are 100% Asian models. Asian models of consoles are normally the same specs as the Japanese versions. I have a few early Saturn games that are all Asian versions but bought here in Japan. The early Mega Drives are very hard to come by now but the boxes were quite fat. I clearly remember this and the white text that read something like Ultra High Definition Graphics and Stereo Sound. The went on about AV something or other. I did have a picture of this MD somewhere. I'll have a good luck tomorrow for it.

Yes, the one that's commonly mistaken for a Japanese model due to the Japanese text is the NTSC version. however that box not only has Japanese text but also English. The Japanese only Mega Drive has no English on the box. The PAL Asian version looks just the same as the NTSC Asian model but with a starry looking PAL VERSION logo on it.

have you guys seen the box art to the "normal" Japanese version of Dead Or Alive 2? It's actually a lot more rare than the so called "Limited" version that I have and Kubrick has just got. I personally like the normal version much better. I'll have to track a copy down.

Just bought Ocarina Of Time as fancied a play through it again. Just had a look at the PAL box - the screenshots on the back make the game look utter crap, when you and I know it most certainly isn't!
