If you look on the lower left-hand side of the unit face, you can see the module has a cartridge slot, two 9-pin controller ports, and (Japanese) Mega Drive and Mega CD logos on it, plus the Mega LD logo. It's for playing special Laser Disc-based Mega Drive games on, but also plays cartridge and CD games. There was also a module to play PC Engine (HuCard, CD and LD) games.

There was a feature about the LaserActive in an early issue of Edge, not sure of the exact issue but it was within the magazine's first year.

            A lot.

I'm sure Yakumo got it for a nice price though.

Not really. I almost got it for under 50 pounds but then I ended up in a bidding war with someone. In the end it cost me 15500 yen! not cheap but worth it when I see the LD player without the MD PAC (As Pioneer call it) going for 16,000 yen and the PAC it's self going for 8000 yen separately.

Mine was listed as junk though. The casing and design of the machine is in very good condition though. At first it wouldn't play and CDs or Laser Discs so a quick cleaning of the lens soon sorted out that problem. Now I have to see what's wrong with the Mega Drive PAC. It keeps coming up as "This is an NTSC Compatible Mega CD for use in Japan and South East Asia" When switched on with no cartridge Mega CD game plugged in. Or a blank screen when there is a game plugged in. It seems as if some arse hole has region modded it. I'll have to buy a GameBit driver though to open it up and take a look. Here's a picture of the error message.

Thats the error screen you see when you boot a PAL Mega CD in 60hz. But obviously with the regions/names swapped around.

So yeah, Mega CD error Yakumo!

That's what's so strange because the LaserActive is Japanese as is the PAC. I'm sure someone has modded the PAC. Just need to get the GameBit drive to check.

Ooh, I've never seen the US version. Nice to see the main character wasn't turned in to a monkey looking woman with a man body like they normally do on US box art.
