Eh?!? How can customs charge VAT for something that wasn't even released in or intended for sale in the UK? Did you buy it from a shop or a private seller?

VAT is levied on anything brought into the country... same applies to most other countries in general in the world.

I know, it just seems to be remarkably cheeky for the government to help themselves to such a hefty fee when it's a retro game that never had anything to do with the UK.

The real cheek is the VAT on shipping! That has nothing to do with tax. I wonder if other countries tax you on shipping?

Just to rub it in, never in my life have I been charged customs or any rubbish to have a parcel delivered to me. Australia is good like that.

Neither have I here in Japan. I have had a few items opened in the past though by customs.
