Just noticed this thread and thought I'd jump in! Top news, good luck Strider from what I've read it all sounds good.

Just a point about the price. I'm glad you've knocked a pound off and ditched the cd. Others might disagree but I always baulked at paying ?6 for a monthly retro mag. Which is one of the main reasons I only brought rg very occasionally. ?5 may only be a quid cheaper but in my mind it makes a big difference. I'd still prefer it to be ?4 as I think thats the sweet spot which will attract more 'floating buyers' but if its as good as rg I'll subscribe.

Also sorry if this has already been asked but I didn't notice it. Is the mag starting again from issue one or are you picking up directly from where rg left off?

How much will the sub offer be?

4.99 is a pound too much I think. Also with so many magazines about these days I would be sceptical about subscribing due to the what happened to the previous incarnation.

The mag will be continuing from where RG left off, so Issue 19 will be the next issue available. As for subs, I'll get that info when I have it.

Bear in mind that RG is a 'niche' publication (ie bought mostly by people who are into the subject) and (certainly in its previous incarnation) carried very little advertising. I'm ok with paying a fiver.

Regarding the 8bit computer Vs Console coverage....

I come from a C64 background and missed out on the Megadrive/SNES era (I had got new interests by then). I think RG went from one extreme to another - the early issues were stuffed with 8-bit articles then when they did the 'new look', it was almost filled with import features and even PC games.

I would like to see a balanced approach - That way, no one can complain that it is going too much in one direction. Some days I will play a C64 games, whilst on others I might play 'Bonk' on PC Engine - A mag should reflect this diversity.

Anyway, I'm glad Darran has got the job as he has the right experience (rather than letting some fanboy fanzine editor loose on it!).

I don't want to kick off like, but that Darran couldn't write his way out of a wet retro bag (no, I don't know what this means either), they should of given the job to that Strider bloke; I rate him.

Nope I don't buy that oft used argument at all. There are many other niche publications sold for less then ?5 - CustomPC for example.

I'm sure the PC modding market is a lot bigger than retrogaming. I've never read that title but how many pages of advertising where in the last issue and what was the page count?

                    No idea.

Advertising wise, why do people think that a retro mag should only carry retro themed ads? Whats to stop the mag looking for revenue from current games publishers placing their ads there too? I'm sure the demographic for a retro mag covers gamers who dont 'only' play retro stuff... An ad for COD2 is just as likely to attract my interest if I see it in RG as if I saw it in Edge.

Anyway on another subject, are we going to get another calendar with the Xmas or New Year issue Strider? Pretty please!?

You raise some good points there mate. Advertising is one thing that I'm thinking of a lot and I've got a few ideas to persuade publishers to jump on board. Put it this way, most ads will tie in with the issue somehow...

As for the calender, it's a great idea, and if we go ahead with it I'll make sure that everything isn't going to be horribly cropped

                          That's not an 8-bit computer...

on a recent trip to france i brought a pretty good retro game mag called... well..'Retro Game'. Its the first issue and looking like a fine read (if only i could understand french), well what i do know is that the magazine is mainly split into three sections one for computers, one for consoles the other for arcades. This issue has a look back at the likes of puzzle bobble, Valis, snatcher, super punch out, final fantasy VI, daytona usa, and monkey island to name a few. It also has features, one which is on retro games coming onto current consoles such as princess crown on the psp, and last blade 1 +2 on the ps2, another on csp1 street fighter 2, another on the developer Raizing, another on ninja characters in games, anotheer on Ralph Baer, and a huge final feature one the gameboy looking back at it past to present, with the mag's choice of the best gameboy games ever (GB to GBA). If your ever in France and can read french you should pick a copy up.

All this has just hightened my enthusiasm over the new and improved retrogamer, Strider, when is the first issue out?

Sounds like an amazing issue mate.

Anyway, Retro Gamer is out on the 8th of December. You won't like it though as it has 4 pages on Dizzy in it

Crikey! I live in France and I've never seen this mag.

When did you buy it? Damn, and I went out yesterday to pick up HL2. It'll be days before I shlep back into town again.

I must keep my eyes peeled for such a publication.
